Supriya (of yesterdays table question) has one more for the crowd. She writes: My husband and I were thinking of getting this lamp (the coffe/olive/navy combination on the extreme right) from PBTeen for our living room.Does this lamp look too teeny-bopperish? Has anyone seen it in person? I would love your feedback on this lamp.

I've never seen it in person.. but i don't think it looks teeny bopperish at all lol

yes...though I haven't seen in it person but I doubt that would change anything.

I hate to say it, but the first thing that popped into my head was "dorm room".
view nazrd's profile
I think if the lamp were flimsy or cheap, it would look too "dorm room". Since it's made by Pottery Barn, I'd suspect its good quality. The pictures of it look nice and I think it would be a great accent even in a "grown-up" room.
Sometimes I browse through PB teen too because I think the products are less stuffy!

not at all. it will look completely grown-up outside the context of the catalog and the pink lamps.

Oh I like them too! Pottery Barn, eh? I will have to take a look, the green/blue/white one would be swell in my bedroom....

I think it looks fine.

It's cute, but reminds me of a college house. I'd say, pick something that you can really imagine yourself having 5 years from now... not selling on craigslist.
view shockthebourgeois's profile
I agree with ljh - I think it would depend on the context. If it were next to a futon, in front of some cinder block-and-plywood shelves, it would definitely look "dorm room", but in a grownup room I think it would be a nice accent.

Put it with a classic marshmallow sofa, and the word "dorm" won't enter your head.

all depends on the rest of your decor. It could be fun in an understated modern room. But I agree with "dorm" comments above. Pottery Barn's lighting is great quality, so I wouldn't worry about it looking cheap.

If the heads were all one color, or chrome or brass - then it would be fine...
...but these look juvenile.
view bepsf's profile
Yes, too juvenile. It's not just the color but also the scale of the shades. They're too big.

sorority house chic!
view duckumu's profile
I think the scale is wrong, although unlike the previous poster, I think they are too small to support placement in a living room. They seem bedroom/dormroom sized.
They're not a bad place to start for inspiration though (at least in the dark colors), so I'd keep looking.

context is everything. it'd be perfectly fine near a nelson clock, not so much next to hello kitty wallpaper. one person's "teenybopper" is another's "whimsy."
view manys's profile
I like it, that color combination looks very adult modern.
view allijean's profile
The lamps just remind me too much of the multi-light medusa-ish lamps that retail stores sell for dorm rooms. You could pull it off, but you'd need a very classy room for it to pass as grown-up.

looks low budget and too young for anyone over the age of 12
view Platnumblonde's profile
i think the color combination you're considering could be a wonderful accent, like people before have said, but the room needs to be extremely pulled together and adult. my rule of thumb would be: if it looks like an accent against a muted background - it works. if it matches anything in the room - you're probably in a dorm:)

yah i would say only maybe if all the balls were white or maybe a walnut wood, but as it stands, it is very teen-ish. i would have totally dug this in my room when i was 16!

Ditto bepsf. I look forward to the day when brushed metals don't dominate.

I bought this on ebay and the quality is nice but the scale is wrong, especially the top. Funky, not in a good way.

i'm in the 'dorm room' crowd.

Thank you everyone for sharing your comments.
Based on the majority opinion and especially thereso's, I think we'll give this lamp a miss and keep our eyes peeled for other lamps.

i'm a little late to this thread, but i have a vintage lamp that is the inspiration for this lamp. mine is all white lamps, with chrome hardware, and the post is actually a long tension rod (about 9 feet) that goes from floor to ceiling. it is very cool, but our apartment has 14 foot ceilings, so we can't use it!
if you are interested in it, leave me a comment here...
