Good Questions: Modern Front Door Hardware?

hardware110808.jpgMichelle sent in a great question: Wondering if you or any of the readers have recommendations on where to find modern front door hardware. Specifically, I'm looking for entry door hardware sideplate locks...

I've found a few here and there online, but not a comprehensive online destination where I can compare and contrast. I'd be super grateful to find some that have a deco bent! Thank you!

Please share your resources and recommendations with Michelle (and the rest of us) on where to find modern door hardware...extra points from Michelle for Deco style!

BALDWIN BRASS in Berkeley. They have some contemporary stuff and can tell you the low down on performance. Important to feel the hardware....you can always order online after seeing in store.

They have a contemporary German line called FSM or something and Emtek has some contemporary stuff.

Schlage is cheaper than Emtek and Baldwin (see soho line), the Centruy line is nice.

Also, Valli and Valli is contemporary.

I think Bath and Beyond (not Bed Bath and Beyond) in Potrero Hill has a huge showroom too.

I second the recommendation for the Century line from Schlage.

We are looking for new door hardware as well, but are having a hard time because we want something in black. Not black with burnished edges, but straight-up black. We have found a few but they don't fit our style at all... too curvy. We want something very clean-lined and modern.

Posted by others, but we chose the Schlage F Series Century Handlesets.

They look great and were by far the best deal. Plus, we wanted to use levers instead of knobs--easier to open--and found them at Home Depot in the commercial hardware section.

Here's a good site that can show you the possibilities:

Folger & Burt Architectural Hardware on 16th and Rhode Island has a great collection of hardware for doors and cabinets. Their showroom is beautiful and you can see and feel a great array of Contemporary, traditional and handcrafted pieces. They also do their own custom finishes so if you can't find what you want (black) then they might be able to do it for you.

1580 16th Street - cross is Rhode Island.

They also have a showroom in Santa Cruz.
