Good Questions: Modern Storage Beds?

2006_07_07_tau.jpgHi AT,

My bedroom is 11x12 feet, ie small, with a small closet. Do you have any tips for a queen sized bed with drawers underneath in a clean "modern" style without breaking the apartment sized budget?

Thanks, Adda

Dear Adda,

The best-looking bed-with-drawers we know of is the bamboo John Kelly Tau platform bed, but it's not exactly cheap. (The best price we've seen is $2,209, at USMatttress.com.) A more affordable option is a "Captain's Bed." FoamOrder, which has a showroom in SOMA, makes an unusual one that's Japanese-inspired. It's $780 and can be topped with either a conventional mattress or with tatami mats and a thick futon, a combo that's super comfy if you like a firm bed.

Anyone else?

How about www.flou.com.

They are pricey (like the John Kelly bed, I suspect) BUT this is a company that only make (relatively) stylish storage beds. So they have a heap of designs. Also storage beds that flip up using a hydrolic hinge (so you don't have to struggle). If you have a seriously small bedroom this may be the best bet since there is no clearance to open deep drawers.

Otherwise, you could always make your own flip up bed with a kit. I read about this on the NY site. Search for it there.

I saw a beautiful bed at LIMN by flou that had great storage options, and came with a great sizable pricetag. I think it was copied by EQ3 in the Bossa platform bed, with side storage and a lift mechanism. Not as stylish as flou, but likely much more affordable. EQ3 also has a store in SF SOMA.

I've been looking into all kind of bed solutions for my upcoming move to NY... Here are some storage beds I came across:

My favorite, the Serendipity in White Lacquer from the Door Store.. no price on the website yet, but I called and the full will be $600 and the queen $700. No idea what shipping to the West Coast would be though.

The Door Stoor also has another bed with drawers called the Tranquility.. but at least from the picture the drawers look a bit small.

The Limo bed which you can get at bo concept and a few other places is really sleek and low, and actually seems like a great bargain. It comes in a few different finishes, and you can get it with or without a headboard:

Another bed I really liked was Iris from A2Z furbniture, and has one of those lift mechanisms:

Comcore21 has a lift bed called Lombardia for a little over $800:

Foamorder.com has a few options with both underbed drawers and lift mechanisms. I don't know anyone who has ever bought anything from them, so can't vouch for quality.

Or, you could get any kind of bed and just use underbed drawers.. here are some simple ones from the Container Store:

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Darlyn

also if you're a DIY-er, Martha Stewart has the same project with instructions on her site. "Under Bed Storage Box" in "Good Things" crafts:

I found a site that sells kits to storage beds. They use the hydrolic lifts. Pretty good deal!!

I had a terrible fiasco involving an order from FoamOrder.com, and I wouldn't advie anyone to deal with them in the future. Awful, incompetent, and rude customer service.

i did a lot of research on storage beds and the best deal i actually found is at wickes furniture. it may not look the nicest but it is the best price with the best storage.

The Tranquility bed from the Door Store looks like it might be the nicest one.

Has anyone seen it? How does the amount of storage compare to that in the storage bed from West Elm and the platform storage bed from Gothic?

I saw a great idea in, I think, the Pottery Barn storage & organization book, if you're handy and so inclined -- the higher your bed, the better:
Get a piece of plywood roughly the size of the space under your bed (allowing for the legs) and screw four castors on each corner. Attach a drawer pull to the front. Whenever you need to access the storage under your bed, you just pull it out - you can store your things in baskets or rubbermaid containers or whatever you like.

Castors have solved many a storage problem in our place.
