Good Questions: Real Wood Drawers?

newgoodq5-23.jpgDear AT,

Any idea where I can find simple, low, wide drawers like these from BoConcept, but that are made from real wood, not veneer? I hate veneer. Oh, and inexpensive would be good.

Thanks!

M.

Dear M.,

We're not big fans of veneer, either.

After a lot of searching, all we've come up with is more veneer. We have to admit that we're stumped. Readers?

M-
Swing by and visit us at Gingko in the City -- on 9th btwn Folsom and Howard. The Indigo Side Table looks sort of like what you're going after--if you need more drawers talk to Mani or Jon about customizing. All Solid Wood. We don't do veneer.
thanks. Sarah.

Hi M,

You could try Hoot Judkins in Redwood City, www.hootjudkins.com they sell finished and unfinished wood furniture. My Brother and Sister-in-Law have bought pieces from them and they have liked what they have purchased.

Matt,
most people don't like veneers, and ill give you a link to some nice maple dovetail boxes when i'm done.

the reality is veneers are a natural product, and when done well can be as compelling as a solid wood product, with the advantage that a 1/16" veneer provide 12 times as many door panels as a solid piece of wood. i don't have accurate numbers to support this info but if you consider a product like MDF or Baltic birch plywood as a base material + then veneered you're making a substantially lighter impact on the environment. (in 10 years your be hard pressed to find solid anything)... so thats the GREEN excuse...

also consider that most panels these days are also veneered for structural purposes. minimal European designs are often shown with large wide expansive panels. these panels would be impossible to produce with a solid wood product because of the natural tendencies for wood to shift + warp..

but since this probably won't make any difference in your pursuit...

(i have not used either of these manufacturers, and to be honest i was looking for someone else I HAVE used, but a simple google for "dovetail drawers" will yield you a host of additional resources)
