Hi AT!
I haven't been able to find any clocks I like, and am planning on making my own w/a hand painted ceramic plate and a "clock kit." Any idea how reliable these are in terms of telling time?
Thanks!!
Jeannette

I make some crafty clocks that I sell and I use the clock mechanisms just like the ones that come in the "clock kit". They work just fine. I have a clock that I made over 2 years ago that is still keeping perfect time on the original battery. I've never had any problem with them. Good luck!
Plenty of decent quartz movements are available for cheap, BUT now you can even buy atomic-controlled (i.e. linked to The Big Clock) movements in kit form, e.g.
http://www.klockit.com/depts/AtomicClockMovements/dept-159.html
(I'd like to slip an atomic clock movement into a Shaker clock like this. The best of the old + the best of the new...)
I've done this with the innards of the ugliest (and cheapest) dinner-plate-with-a-clock I could find.
The mechanism usually is attached with a small nut. The clock hands were not my style and too small and I glued the new ones on top.
I don't think you can go wrong with the mechanisms: they might be the same for every battery operated clock. And, for that matter, easily replaceable.
That's a good idea, Thomas. My problem with the clock kits has not been doubts about their performance, but doubts about the style of the hands.
