I've been drooling over the Stokke Variable chair, and I can find places to order it online, but I really want to sit on one in person before purchasing. Do you know of any stores in San Francisco that carry it?

Dear Cat,

As far as we can tell, Stokke's action chairs are sold by only one retailer in the US, BackCare Basics, in Needham, Massachusetts. We've seen some web chatter of another place in New Mexico...but that's probably not very close to where you live. You may have to buy this chair on faith!

Speaking as a yoga teacher for a sec, the Variable does look like a great bet for your body. The design forces you to perch on your sitz bones, which will, over time, strengthen your core muscles and help create better alignment of your spine.

Does anyone know of a closer-to-home source for Cat?

It's not as nice a design, but same concept, and you could go to a Relax the Back store (which they have some in the bay area) to try it in person.

i have one and i swear by it. so much so i want a second. unfortunately backcare basics tells me stokke is no longer shipping them to the u.s. would love to hear if you know of another source... thanks!

Great News! Backcare Basics is now taking orders for the Stokke Balans Variable chair. Stokke was purchased by a new company and is now known as Varier Furniture. Backcare Basics, www.backcarebasics.com is presently the only US retailer to be importing the line. Shipping is free to the lower 48 states. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

The Variable is excellent for meditation and strengthing your core. It can also be used for working at a desk, sitting at your kitchen table, etc.
