Good Questions: What the heck is this vintage find?

2007_06_20_gq_chair.jpgHi AT:SF,

Can anyone tell me something about this chair?

I found this little treasure of a seat at Urban Ore and took it home for $30. I am now wondering what the heck it is. The seat flips open to reveal a storage compartment inside.

Thanks!
Tarina

Hi Tarina,

We believe your find is a vintage sewing chair, a little like this one. The compartment is a storage space for sewing and craft projects.

Sewing chairs are a rarity these days, but one of their principle manufacturers, Stump Home Specialties of South Bend, IN, apparently still makes them. Is yours a Stump chair? They might be able to tell you more.

Anyone else?

I bet you it's for sewing.

My first thought was sewing, too.

It's a proto-portapottie.

The chair is meant for the storage of sewing material.

Great find! I would like to use something like that under a desk in an entry way. Won't trip over it, that's for sure.
