Good Questions: What to do with my Dark Stairwell?

2006_10_04_stairs.jpgHi AT,

Speaking of color... I'm lost on what to do with these stairs. They are narrow and darkish. They had glue on them and I thought I could just paint over the glue and deal with it five years from now, but the paint didn't stay. But no matter because I was painting them that yellowish color on the bottom stair and it was turning out to be too greenish (which isn't showing in the photograph).

Now I've got them stripped. Somewhat. Can't decide whether to paint them or sand them down and stain them.

Any ideas about color? Stain? What to do? -KT

Hi KT,

If they're not fully stripped the paint will never create a very lasting finish, so you may want to just keep the risers white and cover the treads with carpet tiles. In a recent thread on Liza Phillips' ALTO Stair Treads several readers suggested using Flor tiles (cut to the size of your stairs treads), which come in a wide variety of styles and colors.

For stairs that get a lot of use, we'd suggest the tough Housepet, which is one of the least expensive varieties of Flor. Housepet comes in some happy, complementary colors that will bounce off white risers and brighten up your stairwell, like Tabby Cat, Parakeet, and Grasshopper.

Anyone else?

You should try stripping them and staining them black, or painting them a high gloss of black or a vibrant red would be nice. I know you said that its a dark stairway but if you leave the risers white there should be enough of a contrast where it would seem easy to navigate even in the dark. But thats only my 2 cents. good luck

has anyone here used flor on stair treads? i'd worry about them staying in place --did you have to use extra sticky tape? how did you get them to stay around the edge of the stair?

They look like softwood - fir maybe? I have seen fir floors stained a rich blood red with a natural vegetable-based stain. This was in upstairs bedrooms but I think it would be stunning for a little staircase like this. Enticing.
I don't know how well these stains would work on harder woods like oak and maple.

I saw a really great stairway that had the outside few inches of each step painted. so natural wood in the middle with a 'border' color (think of it as a natural wood 'runner' on painted steps). then you can even keep changing the paint color as you grow tired of it since you could re-paint in one afternoon!
