I requested that the Salvation Army pick up some furniture on Wednesday but haven't received any confirmation. I'm in Pacifica and have to be in Illinois on Friday, and have no place for furniture there. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Pat,
First, we'd contact the Salvation Army to see if you can find out whether they've scheduled the pick-up.
If they haven't, then here are a couple of ideas:
• Pick of the Litter, Burlingame
• Uhuru
• Out of the Closet
• The "free" section of Craigslist
• Freecycle
Anyone else?

I'm in NY so I'm not sure how applicable this is to SF, but I would put it on the sidewalk with a "take me" sign.

Nonprofits like Salvation Army can't operate on donor's schedules, so Leslie's advice to confirm whether you're on the schedule makes sense. Craigslist is also great for getting rid of things quickly, especially if you post under Free.
Good luck on the move to Chicago!

On the curb, with a sign that says FREE. Works every time.

Yeah, I put stuff on the street and within seconds it is gone! Also, Goodwill takes drop offs. I just pull up to the Geary one, take my stuff inside really quick, and i'm on my way. Here is their website so you know which ones allow drop offs: http://www.sfgoodwill.org/LocationsDonate.aspx

What's that thrift store on Valencia & 17th (or somewhere around there)? When I was moving from San Francisco they picked up pretty fast. (maybe 24 hours or less.) They let you choose what charity the proceeds from your stuff goes to too!

I've had success with a "Free, on the curb now" post on Craigslist.

United Cancer Research lets you call to schedule a pickup - in our neighborhood (trivalley) they have two standing days a week they can come to you- you just need to call incase the truck is filled. it may not be the quickest, but it's convient and i usually can get on the next days pickup.
there is always your local freecycle group too...
goodluck!
