Looking for a Bench for Bathroom
Good Questions

bath71709.jpgQ: I am trying desperately to locate a bench like the one in this photo for use in my bathroom. I keep running into a wall because either the benches are not quite the right style (too many embellishments) or the price is amazingly high. [more below]

I'm worried about spending too much money on a bench that might suffer under the constantly fluctuating temperatures of my bathroom but I love the look! Can anyone help me find a moderately priced wooden bench with a similar style?

Please share any sources and suggestions with Dee in the comments below...thanks!

I believe those are called saddle stools. You would probably want one made of teak or another wood that is rot-resistant, but I am not seeing any saddle stools made of teak (I only did a quick google search though). Good luck!

This is similar to the one in the picture, and you could always stain it. You may have good luck checking ikea, they have all sorts of furniture.

Wisteria has both a teak stool and a vintage stool very similar to that in the picture

Not teak, but rubberwood - and only $53 bucks.

I know 2 places where you can get those stools...
The first is a store called Gordmans. I've seen them in the Gordmans in Springfield, MO but I believe Gordmans is a chain and has several locations.

I've also seen them at Furniture Row in the Oak Express store in Springfield, MO. Again, Oak Express is a chain and has several locations.

Doesn't Ikea sell something really similar?

I have the one from Gaiam. It's great, but you have to sand it occasionally to get the gook and mold off. Scrubbing won't do. Of course, this will be the case with any teak bench in the shower.

I wouldn't get anything from ikea, since it won't be teak and will decompose quickly. I see what you mean about the prices. About a year or two ago, I bought a teak garden bench on ebay for about $100 with free shipping. I found that one distributor was selling this bench on Ebay, amazon, etc for a wild range of prices. It was downright weird. Based on that experience, I'd say monitor ebay until your bargain comes up.

Try Chinatown. This style bench is sold in just about any Chinese furniture store, at high quality (with character) and not a big pricetag. I have one and my mom has one, both picked up at small Chinese shops. I paid probably in the $50-$75 range.

It was a few years ago but I bought a bench exactly like this at Pottery Barn. I remember it was fairly cheap as I was able to use a gift card to purchase it.

I've seen a very similar bench/stool like this at Books & Bookshelves at the corner of 14th and Sanchez in SF.

I think Bamboo colony has a variety of heights - and they are downsizing right now- so they seem to be selling warehouse items http://www.bamboocolonyhome.com/

Outdoor benches, they will withstand the temp. and moisture and now that summer is over they will be on sale.

this is a set of TWO for $59.99! they're actually pub stools but they look almost exactly like the one in the picture and they won't put a huge whole in your wallet... you'd have to sand it a bit to give it that worn look.

I found a cheap but sturdy bench at a Chinese variety shop on Clement St. for $11. It has a small seat but it is just the right height and a really rich color. I'd say the shop was a block up from the Goodwill on Clement, same side of the street, with all the lanterns and fans in the front of the store...

Thanks everyone. I think the hard part is finding a bench. I've come across tons of stools for one person but I want a wider bench. The picture is a bit deceiving but that's actually a bench about 36 inches wide. Awesome suggestions. D-

i also spotted the one at books & bookshelves, and i know they do custom bookshelves, so i bet they'd do a custom stool/bench as well.
