David,
Not to automatically fall back on IKEA, but they do have some great solutions:
• LOKKA Folding Table (shown in Northwest #7: Shannon's Sumptuous Studio and Apartment #4: Jen & Roy's Minimalist Reno from 2005 )
• NORDEN Gateleg Table
• MUDDUS Dropleaf Table (shown in House Tour: AB Chao's Modern + Old = MOLD)
• NORBO Wall-Mounted Dropleaf Table
Anyone else?
You can also go vintage.

It's hard to guess how much space you actually have for a table, but in a similarly sized apt that is very narrow, we've used a small (29") round table with a pedestal base that have the feet flush with the floor. The round top paired with the single pedestal center makes it so you can navigate past it fine, whereas even a similarly sized square table with 4 legs would take up too much space. I've also thought of replacing the top with a drop leaf (where each side leaf is a half circle) so that there is the possibility of making it larger if needed.

I almost bought the IKEA Norden Gateleg which I think it great for small spaces. I especially like the drawers.
I ended up finding a Danish Modern gateleg on Craigslist and it folds up to be 6" Deep!
I like this option because you can use it as a console when not being used for eating and you have the option to seat 2-3 or 4-6 depending on how you unfold it.

You can't beat a small drop leaf table. With the leaves down you can buttress it against the wall or a couch.

Neat expanding table at www.SmartFurniture.com that collapses to be a console table that is only 18" wide, but can also be pulled out for a full dining table.

I too have the IKEA LOKKA table and love it. It has fit perfectly in 4 different apartments in the tiniest spots. If we upgrade, it will probably be to a drop-leaf table of the vintage variety. Good luck with the search!

I have a gateleg table similar to the IKEA NORDEN (only in real wood) and I love it. Mine has chairs that hide on the interior but I think its fairly easy to find versions with either chairs or drawers inside of them.

Thanks for all the comments, there have been many good suggestions. At the moment I am having the kitchen redone. I am still thinking of having a pull out table built into the kitchen cabinets, as I think even a small table will clutter the room (which already has plenty of clutter). I'll post some pictures with the result!
