SF Good Questions: Recommendations for SF Contractors?

4-21-contractor.jpg
AT:SF, I wonder if anyone has recommendations for a contractor in SF. I'm relocating from NY and just signed a contract for a Victorian (>1300 sq ft ). We love the house but already have a list of tasks we'd like to tackle asap:

•Remove upstairs carpet and install wood floors - or refinish, if salvageable. It looks like it might have been painted : (
•Custom metal work for 3 window guards. Maybe aluminum. Like to do something interested like the circle pattern on the door in this post.
•Wood fence for the backyard. Circle of slate in the backyard.

The list goes on and on, new kitchen, new mantle, waterproof basement, silver paint on roof, fix open window in attic.... But I'm starting with the three above.

The task themselves aren't earthshaking but finding good contractors in a new town is daunting.

I've tried Angies List but I'm not really finding what I need. Thanks!

-Michael

You might try Orecal construction. I know they have a website, but I'm not exactly sure what it is.

We've had excellent luck with Cole Hardware's Referral Service for all kinds of jobs - a new roof, a new water heater.

For any kind of flooring, I recommend Bay Flooring Solutions, previously called Rick Bauman Floors - and that's what the web site still says. Just one of many good things about them: All their installers are employees. They haven't done my floors, but I've seen a couple they did do, and the workmanship was extremely good. They just refinished the floors at the yoga studio I go to, and the owner is ecstatic.

You should consider using Yelp -- it's full of reviews on everything in San Francisco. Here's a link to our contractor, who I recommend highly (but he may not take on jobs that are too small):

Good luck!
