SF Good Questions: Where Can I Find this Patio Chair?

3-19-patio chair.jpg

AT:SF, Where can I find patio furniture like the chair in this photo? My wife and I just bought our first house and have been looking for patio chairs just like these. Please help.

Jaythan,

We think those are discontinued chairs from IKEA. We do see them on Craigslist from time to time.

Anyone have ideas for similar chairs for Jaythan?

Yeah I think ikea -- we have a couple in black where I work -- I'll check the bottom of one tomorrow to be sure.

I bought mine at IKEA but they were on clearance 2 years ago so I think they don't make them: http://www.flickr.com/photos/81911961@N00/294596696/

According to House and Home magazine Sept. 2007, pg. 71, they're by Ikea (and probably from a few seasons ago).

IKEA, and sadly, they're not around anymore! They used to come in all kinds of cool colors.
Check Ebay.

Ikea is correct, and luckily for you they are not available. These chairs look alright, but if you enjoy sitting for periods of time longer than 18 seconds these are not what you are looking for.

I agree with bucky43. I have had the displeasure of sitting in these Ikea chairs. The slippery surface and low back ensured that you could not relax on these chairs. This was a particular problem at a party where people were drinking; I think one of them ended up floating in the pool. Although, I don't recall if it ended up in the pool out of frustration with the discomfort or a test of its suitability as a water lounger.
They are very cool looking and probably are no longer available from Ikea because of the lack of comfort.

yes, IKEA. I have 2 in green. Yes, they are discontinued. and Yes, pretty uncomfortable but stylish! Also, mine have lost their sheen over the years. They will be heading to freecycle this summer.

we have these and they totally suck!
they are uncomfortable and they get dirty and stained very easily--

the chair is the IKEA PS VÅGÖ chair, from the 2001 PS collection. it was designed by the architect Thomas Sandell. he felt that good outdoor furniture was hard to find. part of the design concept was that the chair had to be stackable, in order to enable cheap and efficient transportation, and space saving when not in use. Thomas thought a footstool was needed, and shaped it so it could be stored under the chair. this means you can use the chair without having to move the footstool. and that hole, besides being for drainage, it's a "fart" hole, Thomas's funny little twist.

new PS collections come out every three years, and the products are designed around a concept that is handed to the designers to fufil. the chair was not discontinued because of discomfort, but because it was time for the retirement of that collection.

For what it's worth, the ones I have (which based on comments were the next version after the pictured one) are very comfortable. I wish they had an ottoman but I use them all the time and find them to be really comfortable. Maybe the next version will also be. Good luck

there was only ever one version of the chair, and it came in 4 different colors. white, black, orange and green. they were discontinued, along with everything else from that particular PS line, when the new PS line arrived a few years later. comfort is really a personal thing, like anything else, as i found them comfortable also.
