I've always considered the difference between art and design that art is inward facing. It is expression of the artist, mainly for the artist. Design, however, is intended for an end user. Design, in order to be successful, must take into account the person or people that will be interacting with the work. Obviously, there are pieces that blur the two, but intention separates them for me.

Two of my favorites:
"That which we elect to surround ourselves with becomes the museum of our soul and the archives of our experiences." Thomas Jefferson
"It's a small apartment, I've barely enough room to lay my hat and a few friends." Dorothy Parker

That Bubble building is stunning. I read that it traps heat to keep the pool warm.. very nice!
