Dwell on Design: Modernist Prefab Homes

9-20-prefab.jpg
Remember when you heard the word "prefab" and automatically thought of your grandparents' mobile home? Well, we've come a long way (baby). Now, prefab is more likely to summon up thoughts and images of contemporary design. Affordability. Efficiency. Sustainability. And that's why we went to Dwell on Design.

It was good, and energizing, and exciting to see so many other people enthusiastic about the same things. But when we sat down to write about some of the modernist prefab homes featured at the event, we realized that in most cases we only saw blueprints, digital renderings, and photos. So it makes sense to tell you who was there and point you to Inhabitat's excellent write-ups, and to fabprefab, a great site dedicated to modernist prefab dwellings.

LOVE fab prefab, but how affordable is it?
i've griped about this b4, but
there's been less haute prefab on the market for the past few decades w/ starting prices(400Kish, just for the structure) which tends to be typically half of the type of prefab Dwell + co. promote...

on another note, there's hardly any land (remotely affordable) here in the bay area to put fab prefab...sacramento + central valley, las vegas + beyond however are ripe...

but then i was born in a trailer park/to the trailer park i may return...certain rare t. parks + the shipping container re-purposing movement + such is what really excites me...
will a new generation find a way into Bolinas...whether fab green pre-fab, yurts +/or biodiesel/telecommuting in the picture, or is there no way the elder bohos will let us in....

ps
lemme less cringe-worthily rephrase please:
"...w/ starting prices tending toward half of the 400Kish (just for the structure) prices for the type of prefab Dwell + co. promote..." but not as sleek, mod, stunning, eco friendly etc, yes....

killer links/post though, honestly!
:-)

We are interested in a prefab home for an 1 acre lot adjacent to our home in dutchess county. We are in the Dutchess Junction area south of Beacon NY, WHICH IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE tOWN OF Fishkill, NY. It would be for my mother to stay douring the Sumer months when she comes down from Florida. Also when she would have health problems she could stay with us as she is 70 years old.We are looking for something less expensive and would like the cost estimate of a completed installed house. Thank you.
