Eco-Friendly Drain Opener

1-19-green.jpgNo, no, no, set down the caustic drain opener and walk away.

Instead, if you have a clogged drain, pour 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain and then let it sit for 15 minutes. Next, flush with boiling water.

You can help keep drains clear by flushing drains weekly with boiling water. You can also use small screens and strainers (like this Sink & Tub Strainer) that will help keep hair and other debris out in the first place.

03.27.07: We just read that you shouldn't pour boiling water down the drain if you have PVC pipes. Hot tap water is suggested instead.

Thank you for guiding folks away from extra-toxic Drano and similar! Btw, I swear by the regular boiling water flush. Whenever I'm done boiling water for tea, the rest goes down the drain. The sink hasn't clogged in ages.

why boiling water?

Boiling water seems to help with loosening up soap scum or grease and pushing it along. The key is to do it regularly.

I tried the baking soda/vinegar/hot water in the bathroom sink when it got clogged. Didn't work because it was a hair clog. Plumber snaked it out and now once a week I pour hot water down (and keep my loose hairs away!)

The whole baking soda thing doesn't really work if you have a drain with small holes like this because it doesn't go down the drain.
