We're really pleased that San Francisco's been trying so hard to promote responsible disposal of hazardous waste, batteries, and electronic devices. The other day, we received a handy brochure in the mail listing more than 100 local businesses that accept these materials from San Francisco residents.
Drop-off locations for batteries include:
• Walgreens (citywide)
• Sports Basement at Crissy Field
• Whole Foods in SOMA and Pacific Heights
• Rainbow Grocery in the Mission
Drop-off locations for latex paint include:
• Cole Hardware (various locations in the city)
• Cliff's Variety in the Castro
• Brownie's Hardware in Nob Hill
Drop-off locations for spare electronics include:
• Goodwill (citywide)
• Zarc in Ingleside
• Computer Recycling Center (various locations in the city)
Drop off locations for fluorescent lights include:
• City Lights in SOMA
• Ace Hardware in the Financial District
• Frederickson Hardware in the Marina
The brochure also lists three free pick-up services:
• SF Hazardous Waste Facility (paint)
• Bulky Item and Electronics Collection (electronics)
• St. Vincent de Paul for electronics (electronics)
As noted in the brochure, always call the drop-off site before leaving your house to find out if there are any restrictions or special instructions for the items you want to bring in. For example, there might be a limit to how many gallons of paint or how many lights you can bring in.
For more information about disposal and recycling options, call 415.355.3777 or use the EcoFinder.

Don't forget to save your Brita filter, which are currently un-recyclable -- but http://www.takebackthefilter.org/ is collecting them in hopes of getting the parent company to set up some kind of recycling!!
While based in the bay area - the take back the filter has been mobilizing people all over the country to meet up and collect these filters!
