Tell us about 1 green move/tip/solution that you've implemented: Shown here is our bottling effort. Since we don't have curbside glass recycling, and since we like microbrews--a lot--we've been trying our hand at homebrewing. We get bottles from friends, and use a local spring (in downtown SLC!) for the purified water instead of buying it in jugs. We do other typical things, like biking, recycling, growing a little garden, and wearing sweaters instead of turning up the heat, but brewing has been our most fun endeavor.

My green inspiration: My friend Holly, shown here milking her goat. She & her husband have an urban farm--chickens, goats, bees...it's amazing!

Our biggest challenge: Heating/cooling: we have a house with a large backroom that's tough to control, so we pretty much close doors & try to stay out of it.

Extra Green Move: Becoming locavores! We bike to the farmer's market & try to eat at least one totally local meal a day. It's pretty easy this time of year, when a quick blanching of english peas makes for lunch.

Thanks, TannerAdair!

Okay.....I have to comment on her kitchen. The stove is butted up to the refridgerator. That is not condusive to efficient use of the refridgerator! They should be moved apart as much as possible.

My 60+ year old house has this problem. I got a smaller refridgerator (with the freezer on the bottom to be a bit more efficient) and pushed the stove over as much as possible. Between them I put a small butcherblock topped table. They do not touch so that the heat of the stove is not conducted to the refridgerator.

I know, the stove placement is awful! We're re doing the bathroom this summer, and the kitchen is in the works for next year--but rest assured we're rearranging. The fridge will move to the other side of the room!

I love reading and learning from the Green site. Thanks!

But does your friend really wear heels and a headlamp to milk the goat?

So happy to have other SLC readers continue to be represented. Not to mention you will drink far beer when you homebrew in the State of Utah! It is pretty ridiculous that Salt Lake doesn't have curbside glass recycling...it is one of my biggest pet peeves about living here.

Go SLC! I swear your house looks familiar. I've seen that gorgeous tree somewhere.

I'm very jealous of your access to goats. I've driven out to Drake Farms a few times, but I've yet to find anyone closer who has any that I can buy milk or cheese from.

Yes, my friend Holly does occasionally wear heels to milk, since they have to do it 2x a day, and the goats don't like to wait for you to change after you have a fancy dinner! Jen, shoot me an email: strick52 at hotmail & we'll go visit.

I thought this was going to be about bottling (canning) veggies and fruits! But bottling your own brew in recycled bottles is even more creative. We live in SLC too... let us know if you ever need any more bottles!

Great idea! My hubbie and I made and bottled our own beer for a long time while we were in graduate school. If you are at all inclined and can get together the cash, it is sooooo worth it to buy a soda pop keg. Instead of spending hours washing, sterilizing, and filling bottles, you just throw it all in the keg when it's done fermenting. Then force carbonate with a small co2 tank. We were able to find almost all our equipment for this used. Happy brewing!
