Sometimes living green is all about creative re-use. We're inspired by designer Heather Wells, who has built a light fixture business around colorful paper cocktail umbrellas. The first prototype was her thesis project at RISD. Now it's one among many variations in shape, size and color that are available through her small lighting company,
bright lights little city.
Our favorite model is the Happy Hour pendant lamp in the Lush collection. It's got a pleasingly rounded umbrella shape and, thanks to its whimsical palette and a glow-in-the-dark phosphorescent coating, is fun on and off, day and night.

This is fabulous! And it's a perfect opportunity to ask: I have a lantern I need to hang from a very high ceiling in a room with wood walls. I've seen the 15-inch IKEA lightbulb cords, but ideally I'd like something a little longer and a little more translucent or browner. Where would I look for something like this? Would it be common in a "real" lighting store?
