ICFF 2008: Bean Rockers from Knoend

2008-ICFF-SF.jpgSan Francisco-based Knoend, whose slogan is "ecodesign for everyone", debuted their new line of ergonomic seating at this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair. We loved the way the Bean Rocker looked, but what really surprised us was how much we loved sitting in it.

The floor rocker "intuitively finds one’s center of balance" and while we're not sure exactly what that means it definitely did some great things for our spine. After sitting in one for twenty minutes our back felt better than it had since getting off the plane two days before. Their small size means the rockers would make great extra seating for people living in small spaces.

The Bean Rockers are part of a line of four floor rockers from Knoend, the others are the Fava Rocker, the Lima Rocker and the Sprout Rocker. Knoend also has a line of low tables that complement the rockers. Since Knoend is a green company, all of the rockers are made from FSC-certified plywood and come with organic cotton cushions.

The bean rocker is available for $125 through Knoend's website.

I can't tell if this is designed to be the next iconic piece of furniture or if it is the kind of stuff the back pain specialty stores are going to offer for the uglification of your home because of your misfortunate ailment, so I voted silver. It reminds me of wine barrel diy.

It's all about the cushion. Right now it's looking more back pain specialty store, but if you whip up a, say, Amy Butler slipcover, it'll start to look iconic.

But who wants to sit on the floor? Spinal readjustment is all well and good, but I don't really want furniture that looks like this.

i like it and i can totally see using it to sit at the coffee table while i'm on the laptop. i also thought diy when i saw it. i have an old wooden ikea futon frame that would lend itself well to this, i think.

oh ... apparently they're getting enough publicity that the price on the web site it $150, not $125 (although a 20% discount & free shipping apply thru may 30).
i'm also not seeing a line of low tables that complement the rockers, but maybe that's coming to a website near me soon?
