Because we work at home, there's often a bottle of water sitting on our desk. We thought it would be nice to have a cooler-looking bottle of water, one that we could re-use, and also carry with us when we go out and about. We've read about the possibility that toxic chemicals from plastic bottles can leach into the water, and although we love the look of the SIGG bottles, there's some uncertainty regarding aluminum, too... An alternative is the Kleen Kanteen stainless steel bottle.
Kleen Kanteen's bottles are reusable (which means less plastic in landfills and oceans), easy to clean, durable, lightweight, and made from stainless steel, which is toxin-free and non-leaching.

Oh no, I really hope the aluminum comment isn't the one about aluminum and Alzheimer's disease. Because that is pretty much not true.

i hope the SIGG bottle is safe b/c i recently bought one! it has an enamel coating on the inside, so even IF aluminum was bad, it shouldn't affect the water. it does look & feel so much nicer than plastic bottles!
cyn in SF, good point! somehow we missed the fact that the SIGG bottles have an enamel coating inside -- oops.
Um, how about instead of spending money on another product we all take a moment to wash out a previously used GLASS bottle/jar/container and give it a new life...
Go to the thrift/antique/junk shoppe and hunt down a unique bottle...clean it and bam you have a unique item that not only serves a purpose but also is a point of interest...
Recycle.
I agree with Julian's comment. Having a sigg or kleen canteen seem good for lugging around outside the home, but somehow not right for the home. Several motnhs ago, I just pealed the label off a clear twist cap wine bottle and filled it with filtered water. The product was so pleasing to the eye and practical, that I purchased a dozen wine bottles with twist caps from a wine supplies store, and now have them prefilled (and lined along the kitchen window, which incendentally looks nice), and just take a bottle and glass with me to the office if I'm working or at the table for dinner. Looks great, functional, and very inexpensive (around $15-20 for a dozen bottles and caps).
I guess purchasing the wine bottles defeats the recycling idea in Julian's post...but you get the idea. You can definitely work off of old wine bottles as well. But finding that many twist cap wines you want to drink is a hard task...
voss water in the glass bottle is quite sexy (if bottled water can be sexy). the glass is quite thick & can be reused. their site says that they're only found "in top hotels, restaurants and clubs," & not available at retail, but i found them at cost plus world market. 800ml for $2.99.
