Back in our summer camp days, we made friendship bracelets and rolled beads out of tiny scraps of paper. But never did we think beyond jewelry. Well, artisans in the Philippines have taken the idea to a whole new level, crafting vases out of magazines and newspapers.
Not unlike our necklaces, this recycled magazine vase is made of hand-rolled “beads.” And believe it or not, it can hold water, just like the newspaper vase below. The secret of the latter is a handy metal insert that protects the fragile fans.
Green, fair trade and a bargain to boot? Sounds like a perfect housewarming gift.
Available, along with several other recycled paper pieces, from Portland’s MNL Style.
I am seeing this trend pop up everywhere - boxes, baskets, crates, etc. I think it's a really great move to reuse resources and it's a colorful, contemporary take on the bohemian vibe that is so popular these days.

Yes, I second what SaraO said...it's everywhere now! It's a great way to reuse and it actually looks good too! The vase in the second picture is unique, I haven't seen that style before but it's very attractive.

Yeah, I saw the rolled vase at Anthropologie. Although, you wouldn't be able to put real flowers in them. They would be ruined if they got wet. But for decoration on their own, they are interesting.

I've admired these, but worried that their colors would fade quickly.

i just bought a set of three of these woven baskets at joann fabric (50% off!). they are made of newspaper (asian characters) and so look like they might fray if put to heavy use. i think i'd look for glossy paper next time. i love them, though!
