SF Bans Plastic Bags

3-29-plasticbags.jpg4-5 trillion? (Trillion? Just how many zeros is that?) That's the number of nondegradable plastic bags used worldwide annually, according to this article in Wednesday's Chron.

Of that 4-5 trillion, 80 million plastic shopping bags are distributed in San Francisco each year. Those numbers are one doozy of a wake-up call. We've felt a little guilty about using plastic shopping bags for our garbage and cat litter, and plastic newspaper bags when we walk our dog. Now we feel really guilty, and we're totally behind the groundbreaking legislation -- San Francisco leads the way again! -- outlawing plastic bags at supermarkets in about six months and chain pharmacies in a year.

We can easily use paper bags for garbage. And we could also order biodegradable bags to use for our dog (like these).

so what do you plan to use for your kitty litter? i have a kitty and putting her poop in brown paper sacks just seems yucky.

It's kind of a catch-22 with cats, because you can get flushable litter, but California is now asking people not to flush the stuff because it has a chemical that kills seals or something. I figure it's better to re-use those newspaper bags that I get anyway. (of course, in AL, you could probably get away with flushing)
