Solar Power in San Francisco
The Bay Guardian: 04.16.08

4-22-08 solar.jpgAs renters we don't have much say in whether our building gets solar panels or not - it's completely up to our landlord. And seeing as he doesn't pay the electric bill here every month, we aren't expecting the footsteps of installers on our roof anytime soon.

However, we were interested to read about the problems facing city residents who would like to install solar panels on their home. From inflated costs to lack of subsidies, it seems there are many hinderances and not always enough incentives to make the switch to solar. We're curious if anyone out there has looked into adding solar panels to their home, and if so, what were the costs and benefits for you?

Yup, I looked into it. I was told that it would still cost $10K, even with state, local, federal subsidies. Our house is only 750 sq.ft and our electric bill last month was only $40. With all of the energy saving measures we've already put into our house that means that it would take over 10 years to get our money back. Uh, no thanks. I think it's better to be careful at home and use less. We do plan on looking into installing it ourselves, though as I've been told most of the cost is labor.

My landlord installed solar panels (not sure if he did it himself) and I think they're heating a commercial hot water heater that's used by all three flats. He owns a plumbing company - hence the never ending supply of free hot water!!
However, they're pretty old and I think the joints where they're attached are causing roof leaks in the winter rainy season.
