Stainless Steel Water Bottles from EarthLust

7-18-earthlust1.jpgOne of these days we really will manage to buy a stainless steel water bottle instead of just thinking about it. And when we do, we'll buy one (or two) from San Francisco-based EarthLust. Not only are they made of high quality food grade stainless steel with non-toxic paints, they have a naturally safe unlined interior -- and they're gorgeous.

EarthLust's bottles are $16-$21, and available at retailers such as Spring. See a list of other stores here.

I have a stainless steel water bottle by Sigg and it has begun to smell moldy. Any ideas for how to clean it out? Hot water and soap don't get rid of the smell.

abs, Earthlust's website suggests cleaning their bottles with baking soda or white vinegar. I just checked SIGG's site and although their bottles are aluminum, they suggest the same -- or they sell SIGG cleaning tablets (!!).

Sighhhh. I'm still waiting for someone to offer a stainless steel water bottle with nice design AND with a wide opening so that you can clean it without special equipment.
The fancy secret material inside Sigg bottles seems over the top to me and I don't like using containers with materials that are secret. I do like that Earth's Lust offers staight up stainless steel but again I see the hard to clean opening. Klean Kanteen offers the wide top but no fun colors. Hey Earth's Lust, why not offer a wide top and a small top option? Clean Kanteen is what I currently own but I would so love for them to update with some color and design options.

Dang it! I just bought a Klean Kanteen and wished they offered designs and now there's a post with cute stainless steel bottles! Ugh. At least my Klean Kanteen has a stainless steel lid and I didn't pay full price (ebay). Still, the cute designs :(.

I like 'em, but the idea of handwashing with baking soda or white vinegar is kind of a pain. Are there eco-friendly options that are dishwasher safe? Or is that an oxymoron?

P.S. Sounds like perhaps I should be doing some research of my own for a future posting, huh?

I have always just added a small handfull of rice into the bottle, some water, and shaken furiously. My dad has had a stainless since I grew up and this is how he always cleans it out. Have not tried it on my SIGG yet... I do not know if the coating would survive an abrasive.

I just use a baby bottle brush to clean out my Sigg. It works great.

Allison from EarthLust here - thanks so much for the shout out, we appreciate it! Wanted to respond that our 1 liter bottle has a wide mouth... For cleaning, it's really easy to just add baking soda or vinegar to water and swish around whenever the water starts to have a taste. It's amazing how well it works - I'll have to try the rice, interesting! A few new designs are coming out in early August... Thanks again all!

Klean Kanteens are nice-Big mouths too. But these designs are fine! And the price is right.

I hit mine with a bottle brush, followed by a vinegar & hot water shakey shake. I found that just vinegar & water wasn't enough.

During the week, I rinse my SIGG briefly and wipe the opening with a soapy sponge. Once a week, I shake dish liquid and hot water in the bottle and then rinse well and let it dry throughly over the weekend. Not a problem and no need for tablets.

Allison,

Could you please tell us where your bottle are manufactured? I am looking for something NOT made in China. I have Klean Kanteens (made in China the last time I checked) as well as about 10 different Sigg bottles. My kids and I use them all the time. So, I'd like something new but origin is really important to us. Thanks!

I bought 2 earthlust bottles from brightandbold.com a few weeks back, and they told me to swish with vinegar or baking soda (like Allison suggested as well), and it works GREAT. The mouths are nice and wide (I put ice cubes in my bottle which fit well), and I like the designs. They are made in China yet, but according to the lady at brightandbold, she said it's a fair trade factory... so it made us feel better about ordering. I'd recommend them.

Hello, wanted to get back to you re: origin - they are made ethically in China at a fantastic factory. They are modern as far as environmental impact and produce high quality products! As far as I know there are no high quality stainless bottles made outside of China... The materials cost a lot more than the aluminum or plastic options. Thanks again!!

Marlaina,

From my extensive research, Earthlust are made in China just like every other manufacturer of stainless steel water bottles. This is because the quality of steel is just as good in China as it is in the USA and at a fraction of the cost.

I would like to comment that the older Earthlust bottles were painted all the way up to the lip. After a while the paint would rub off and get into my water. Another thing was the plastic top was cheap and little shavings of plastic would also get in my water. So I recommend avoiding the older models.

Allison from Earthlust provided me with one of her new and improved water bottles for review and I must say they are much improved. They no longer paint up to the lip and the plastic top is a lot better quality so there is no longer plastic shavings in my water.

If you want you can take a look at my review of Earthlust water bottles at my web site Safe Water Bottle Review

Allison from Earthlust has really done a great job making improvements to their water bottles.

When I read that Mountain Equipment Coop dropped their Nalgene bottles from the shelves in Canada, I switched to a stainless steel bottle from pics-usa.com. They're great because you can put your own photos or artwork for a personal touch, and they have a wide mouth for easy cleaning.

Marlaina,
Don't know if material or origin is most important to you, but Laken water bottles are made in Spain. Laken bottles are made of lightweight, 100% recyclable aluminum and are certified BPA-free. They have some really great designs and the company itself has been around since about 1912. You can check them out at our boutique http://www.lavishandlime.com
