Fire pits have caught our attention this year, first because we're planning on doing something with our little brick patio, and second because we can't count on heat from the sun. This one from VivaTerra is made from old steel oil drums, with star-shaped cutouts to dress it up.

I heart Viva Terra. Its the only catalog I have come to the house.

Fire Safety Refresher
There is nothing like having a flickering fire to set the mood for a relaxing evening outdoors. Knowing how to manage the fire properly, as well as practicing fire safety techniques, can help you be sure your home remains safe and the fire stays under control. Many of the tips can seem like common sense, but it does help to periodically refresh one's memory just in case. Here are some important tips to remember for managing fire safely:
* Make sure that any outdoor fire pit or torch you purchase is constructed well and made with safety in mind. Look for features such as a sturdy base and an add-on fire screen to prevent airborne embers.
* If it is a wood-burning fire, make sure that you only use firewood and pass on adding any paper or green wood to the mix.
* Keep any potentially flammable objects at least three feet away from the fire.
* Make sure you have a suitable fire extinguisher near by and that you know how to use it in case of an emergency.
* Never leave a fire unattended.
* If you are wearing loose-fitting clothing, be careful around the fire.
* Use caution with children and pets around a fire.
* Make sure that you know the law in your area; some places do not allow open flames outdoors.

WARNING ABOUT TIKI TORCHES:
If you're looking for a cheap alternative for a "fire in the garden", you might want to opt for Tiki torches. Please be careful! A good friend of mine had a lit Tiki torch knocked over on him and the Tiki fuel lit him up like a Roman candle. It was horrible. He's fine now, a year later, but he has some serious burn scars.
