Hand-crafted Textiles from Fabindia

21009fabindia1.jpgOn a trip to India last year, we discovered Fabindia, a department store of sorts that carries affordable hand-crafted home goods. At some point, sadly, our suitcase just couldn’t hold anymore block-printed linens. But recently, while coveting some John Robshaw bedding that didn’t quite fit our recession budget, we thought of Fabindia again and discovered their online store. Check it out after the jump…

Most of Fabindia’s textiles are made by hand: hand-loomed, block-printed, embroidered, or hand-dyed. What results are lovely, high-quality linens for the bedroom and dining room; our favorites are block-printed with rich, saturated colors.

Not only are Fabindia’s prices reasonable—queen-size bedspreads cost between $25 and $65—but we also feel good about spending our money there. The company’s been in the news recently for pioneering a business model that gives company equity to their weavers and suppliers in Indian villages. Part of the corporate structure is a micro-finance company that allows communities of craftspeople to trade and control their shares in the larger corporation.

It’s always nice to shop for chic, desirable products from a company whose policies we respect. And we don’t even have to fly to India to do it! (Although that might be nice.) Orders ship internationally for a flat fee of $15, or for free if you spend over $100.

Cool, thanks. Their store in Mumbai was probably the only place I found with high quality textiles. Oooh the patterns!
