When floral boutique Rose and Radish re-opened in August it was with a fresh concept: the "retail exhibition." This incredibly stylish Hayes Valley design store is DesignTorget-meets-gallery, with the inventory and display changing every 6-8 weeks to riff on a new theme. This translates into: everything in the store will seem preternaturally gorgeous and fresh to your eyes, and it's all for sale.
Following a successful run with the ethereal WATER theme and the more grounded EGG, this month
R & R lets down its hair with KIDS' PARTY, which will run through mid-November. The approach is similar to our own (with regard to Kids' Design Month) here at AT: it's an excuse to bring in da fun, for people of all ages.
Actually, "bring in da fun" is a good way to describe Rose and Radish's curatorial spirit in general. The selection and display of merchandise is wildly creative and inspiring.
Owner and floral designer Cate Kellis' amazing selection of tableware, lighting, flowers, wallpaper, paper goods, textiles, ceramics, and other design objects hails from around the world, and much of it is unique -- or at least extremely hard to find in the Bay Area and PNW.
A trip here will make you covet some great stuff you and your home don't really need, but that will send your heart aflutter all the same (so what's-a-little-clutter-anyway...don't tell Maxwell we wrote that), so it's good that not everything is
Gus Lightstick-expensive ($506). There are one-of-a-kind
wallpaper panels for $180,
colorful stools for $163, and
songbird candles for $18/pr.
As for
Kids' Party, Cristina over at R&R wrote us yesterday to say: "...we have so much fun stuff to check out: items specifically for kids (stuffed animals, coat hangers, trucks, pull toys) as well as inspired by them (Royal Tichelaar plates, cushions, porcelain containers, felt coasters and tablemats). There is a huge range from inexpensive toy cars and plastic bowls up to high-end wallpaper." And most of it, we might add, is "sweet but not cloying," a balm to many a decorating parent awash in the sea of baby blue and bunny pink.
Cristina says the next show will be called WOODLAND and will open after Kid Party in mid-November, followed possibly by a theme after our own hearts: URBAN.
soooooo worth a trip, their flower + vase selection has always been sublime...a most exciting expansion....
We bought the yellow bird coat pegs you pictured above thinking we would hang it at toddler level so the kidlet could learn to hang her own coat.
But we've yet to figure out how to hang it in such a way that it is stable. It falls to the floor every time little girl tries to hang her jacket :-(

We wanted to let you know that we would recommend a wood screw with a head that will not slip through the keyhole fixture on the back of the bird coat hanger. If you're still having trouble with it falling, give us a call at the store. We'd be glad to help you out.
