Holistic isn't a word we often associate with our home. Yet it makes sense that all of a home's systems -- heating, insulation, ventilation, lighting -- are related to one another. In this weekend's Chronicle, Anh-Minh wrote about energy audits, which are performed by companies for homeowners who are usually interested in decreased utility bills. Other benefits can include improved air quality -- and a greener home.

We're about to build a house in Switzerland and we had to present an energy audit even before we start digging earth. The required energy use value has again shrunk from the last revision a couple of years ago. Our heating planner and architect have done well keeping everything within half the required value thanks to geothermal heating, double glazing, compact house form and heat recovery ventilation system. Thank god it's a new build. Simple renovations in old houses would be hell since they'd have to go under audit using new standards.
