apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Balance Fireplace by Conmoto

Traditional fireplaces be gone. While, honestly, we'd be happy with any type of fireplace at all, Conmoto's Balance Fireplace has now become our fantasy fireplace.

We love this floating version, with its sleek combination of alcohol-fueled fireplace, firewood storage, and shelving units or chests of drawers. There are air chambers positioned between the components so that heat dissipates upwards.

We weren't surprised to find that it was designed by Peter Maly, or that it won the 2005 reddot award in Germany.

Why bother having a wood storage bin for a fireplace that burns alcohol? That's just so not cool. If it's a fake fireplace, then it should look like a fireplace!

If you live in California and you're dreaming of a fireplace, check out Malm. They sell wood-burning and vented (not ventless) gas fireplaces.

I have the firedrum 2 in white (in NYC) and I am working on getting a gas logset put inside.

I wonder if this is somehow DIYable using a fireplace that is actually legal.

If you look at the site this is actually a wood-burning fireplace. They do have some alcohol fireplaces, but I've been concerned they are not really worth it.

In an article in the NYT a little while back, a reviewer basically said it was not much better than lighting a few candles in terms of the flame you get. Another commenter I saw on a blog somewhere basically said "watching a burner on a gas stove is more exciting."

Has anyone else had experiences with alcohol-fueled ventless fireplaces? And are those really illegal in NYC, or is it just the gas ventless fireplaces?
