apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Fan Blades from SkyMall

9-19-08fanblades.jpgFace it, San Francisco is a city of renters. And as renters, we all know of some of the hideous things that can come with an apartment. Like those tacky brass and faux wood ceiling fans. Yuck! Thankfully, the SkyMall (out of all places!) has a neat way to dress up your ceiling fans.

9-19-08fanbladesext.jpgEach "frond" slides onto your existing fan blade, no tools needed. For $139.99 you get five blades, each 15" wide and 23" long. Available in natural, burl, oak, ivory, or sand.

I think "tacky brass and faux wood' is preferable to hideous faux palm fronds.

Pls dont do anything to make those ceiling fans more obvious. In tacky Florida, we have to have them to conserve energy on AC. But there are really cool and cleanlined ones readily available. And cheap too.

This one is just over $100

this is a case where the cure is worse than the disease.

Yeah. I can buy little blade condoms to make my ugly ceiling fan look even more heinous? Awesome. Way to go, Skymall.

All you'd need after the blades is the Hot Diggity Dogger.

Hey, I've got a better idea - strap Madonna album covers on 'em!

Yeah.. it'd just be cheaper to pick one up at your local Big Box retailer... of something that is more tasteful.

Sorry, but maybe if it was at least half the cost? It might work for some.

these are hideous AND make the fan less energy efficient.

It's not faux wood, it's real plastic! Until we come up with materials that are more energy friendly to replace plastic we are stuck with this stuff. However, real wood would be heavy and less efficient. Real fronds would deteriorate and be less effective. These add on fronds might add too much weight to the fan making it less efficient.

I have a Hampton-Bay fan with blades that are tilted perfectly to give maximum air flow. A real energy saver since I'm in Texas where AC and fans must be on most of the time. The blades are plastic, easy to clean and light and this is more important to me than having real "pretension." They are also designed as fronds and look good giving the room a warm look. Home Depot on sale for $119 and worth it instead of adding those large blades that are visually over powering.

I'd probably like these more if they weren't from SkyMall.

Awful. Completely horrible. I live in Savannah and these things cover Tybee Island's condos. Cheap. Tacky. Just, hideous.

How do they not fly off the blades when you turn it on?

Terrible! I'd just buy a new fan and call it a day.

When I had an ugly fake wood and brass ceiling fan in an old apartment, I took off some of the brass detailing and painted the blades beige to match the ceiling (I had my landlord's permission, I should point out). The blades blended in much better then, and the fan didn't look so obvious. Much better than giant scary plastic palm fronds......

I think what makes the fans ugly is the dangling lights. I have a pretty basic one from Home Depot but I did not put the light on it. And as the Texan said, down in the south there is no getting around having one of these things!

Wow. Much dissing on the palm frond look. I live in the Northeast and think they're kind of a different (i.e., not necessarily bad) look. But, I can understand the "tacky" Tommy Bahama theme. euw!
