Blogging the Chronicle: What's in Furniture? It's Enough to Make You Sick

Susan Fornoff's article hit home. In Wednesday's H&G she writes about Laura Ingram, who had violent allergic reactions to the chemical lacquer in newly purchased bookcases...

Even leaving the furniture outdoors for three months didn't help. Fornoff says it's possible to find furniture that's chemical-free and made of all-natural material, and includes a list of resources and "cures for toxic furniture."

Since we're very sensitive to chemical odors and offgassing, we can relate.

I'm down in L.A. and it's scary to think of all the pressboard and toxic-lacquered furniture that has burned up in the wildfires and is now in the air. yum!

not quite as violent, but a similar thing happened to me with not one, but two, pottery barn rugs. at one point the odors coming off the one in my living room was so bad that i found myself in the bathroom vomiting while a migraine made it's way to my head. such a shame too because it was a beautiful, somewhat expensive rug.
