apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Home & Garden Highlights: 07.25.07 and 07.28.07

2007_ho_athome_davis06.jpgAlthough the Chron puts out an H&G section twice a week, we're experimenting (again) with covering it just once a week. This way (we're theorizing) we will always be able to find at least a couple of tidbits that will be relevant to the AT readership. Let us know what you think in the comments.

AROUND THE HOUSE: Of Susan's small-space picks (her theme this week), the one with most potential to change your life is the The Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter, which allows you to grow fresh tomotos without a garden.

She also has news of a call from HGTV for Bay Area homeowners to share (and reappraise) their homes with "My House Is Worth What?"

2007_07_30_atsic.jpgLearning curves: A little SoCal in SF? Zahid Sardar takes Design Spotting to SoMa to meet John Barone and Jason Langkammerer of At-Six Architecture. The two met while studying architecture at SCI-Arc, down in Santa Monica, and their fledgeling SoMa firm is bringing some of the pioneering school's flair to local residences and commercial spaces.

2007_07_30_night_light.jpgHOT STUFF: Laura Thomas spotlights Light Affection, which turns photos into lamps by computer-etching the image into a synthetic translucent material.

AT HOME WITH TODD DAVIS: Susan Fornoff talks to the local contestant on HGTV's "Design Star," Todd Davis, a former extreme athlete who's now building a career as an artist and renegade designer. Todd designed a cool hydraulic closet for his own SF loft (see picture above). His blog is here.

you can also save the money and shipping costs of the topsy-turvy tomato planter by simply making one from a five-gallon bucket. check it out here: http://frecklewonder.typepad.com/frecklewonder/2007/04/upside_down.html
