Home & Garden Roundup: 09.16.06

2006_09_17_sigstyle_bull19_.jpgAfter reading Editor Lynette Evans' latest complaint about Modernism (essentially that it's for young people), we almost didn't want to find out what else lay in wait for us in the Chron's H&G this weekend.

But the piece on architect Henrik Bull caught our eye, and so we read on. (He's a Modernist, mind you, but a woodsy one.)

  • SIGNATURE STYLE / HENRIK BULL: This "Bay Tradition modernist," who is known for "not screwing up the nature," is also a fan of kids, and outfits family residences with fun details like fire poles.

  • From clutter magnet to cozy nook: Risa Nye spent $10K creating a reading nook in a window, and not surprisingly, it looks quite comfy now. An Oakland upholsterer is mentioned: Kay Chesterfield. Anyone have experience with them?

On the one hand, I have to agree that a lot of modernist furniture isn't all that functional if you want comfort -- but why has the Chronicle become so opposed to the revival of modernism?

I don't read the print edition, so I don't know if they have a lot of advertisers who sell more traditional furniture, or if this is just snarkiness to create controversy.

Well, I'm not "young," whatever the hell that means, and I just purchased two red Eames plywood chairs (which I scored throught AT:SF Scavenger). I find them extremely comfortable. I also just purchased to MCM redwood Chinese chairs, also v. comfortable. I do agree that lots of the "Danish Modern" stuff isn't very comfortable; you have to try them out to see if they "fit" you.

You got red Eames chairs, too?

    OMG. Major red envy.

Yup. (Insert evil/joyful laugh.) They are gorgeous. Got them from two separate sellers on Craig's List. One is the low "lounge" version, the other the side chair. They look great together or apart. (Insert evil/joyful laugh.)
