apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Victoria & Anh-Minh in the Chron!

There's just no way that we could wait until tomorrow's H&G Highlights to blog this. . .

Two of our very favorite people, Victoria (aka, sfgirlbybay, House Tour host, and contributor to AT:SF), and longtime AT reader Anh-Minh (writer of occasional-but-not-frequent-enough-for-us Chron articles, as well as her own blog), are in today's Chronicle. Anh-Minh interviewed Victoria about decorating as an apartment dweller, and then a photographer trailed her around Alameda to watch her treasure-hunting.

I *love* Victoria's apartment and blog. She has an incredible eye.

But as someone who squeezes a family of three into 600 square feet, I couldn't help resenting the writer's implication that 900 square feet is a small, tight space for a girl and her dog ;-)

hi mamachilanga,

i'm so sorry if you took offense at all. i think what i was trying to get across was that her space feels like MORE than 900 square feet -- but not necessarily that 900 square feet is tiny. maybe i didn't do such a good job of that!

but it sounds like you and your family would make a good subject for an article, too!

No offense taken at all, Anh-minh...

Space is very relative, is it not?

And yes, Victoria has done a wonderful job with hers.

Victoria's apartment is one of my favorites..I frequently revisit her original house tour. Now that I can see from the article that this will always be an evolving work in progress, I hope she continues to share the adventure with us.

Love the apartment. Love her blog. Love the article.
So happy for Victoria. And that Spring is here.

I liked the original house tour, and was reminded of my space challenges while renting in a 1905 house flat in Alameda. But ... everything I liked most from the tour has changed in this apartment.

It seems like the personal style is being removed and the familiarly trendy midcentury silhouettes are dropping in-- and yet personality in choices is the theme in the article and its quotes. Now, I see that tulip table (again) and that rocker (again). Manohman, I loved the way the earlier lounging chairs suited the bay window.

I'm with you Ter - I found the original house tour to be so very unique and inspiring. The older pieces seemed to go better with the place. The fantastic wood dining table with the turned legs has been replaced by a cheap tulip table (a Docksta from IKEA, although even a real Saarninen wouldn't go with the chairs or the apartment the way the old wood table did). Several of the interesting chairs seemed to be gone. That Eames shell rocker is so everywhere.
I'm not saying her apartment is ugly now, it's very pretty, it's just that it used to look so much more unique and personalized. I kind of think of this as a before-and-after example of what I don't want to happen to my own apartment - swapping out unique pieces for of-the-moment trendy stuff and ending up with a place that starts to look like everybody else's space.

It didn't occur to me to add in the line from our House Tours, but I guess I have to say it here:

thanks everyone for your lovely comments. and thanks to ahn-minh for writing the article!

and thanks leslie for your support - it's okay. everyone is entitled to their opinion. i know my apartment still reflects my personality, as I know myself pretty well. :)

i love my new things and there are more changes to come. i never liked the wood table's turned legs - they looked very pottery barn or crate & barrel to me. very generic. my mum is sending me her 200 year old french farm table with straight legs, which i plan to add modern white chairs to - to contrast the older table. but for now the trendy ikea docksta will stay - i really like it with the vintage chairs around it. i'll probably be moving it to the bay window (for shame!).

what the photos didn't show is that all the old unique chairs are still in the apartment - just moved to new rooms and different areas. and lots of my unique things are there - the russian man's record case, my Rico Suave painting, the stained glass window as headboard, the $5 buffet and chalkboard. lots of things i really love.

thanks everyone for reading the article - it was a fun fifteen minutes of fame! :)
