House Call: Maggie Mason of Mighty Goods
San Francisco

maggie_terrariums3.jpg

There's a good chance that you've stopped by at least one of her websites. Maggie Mason is the genius behind Mighty Goods (a shopping site), Mighty Junior (devoted to kiddies), Mighty Girl (her personal blog), Mighty Finds (an Etsy shop) and — as of last week — Mighty Haus (a shopping site devoted to housewares). Somewhere between running all of these lovely sites, she found time to snap some photos of her San Francisco apartment and give us a little insight into her decor.

SF House Tour: Patrick's Curiosity-Filled Studio

7-15-patrickHT1.jpg

Name: Patrick Segui
Location: San Francisco
Size: ~700 sq. ft.
Years lived in: Rented for 6 years

>>Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpg After seeing Patrick's apartment it won't come as a big surprise to find out he's an artist, even if you didn't initially realize that many of the pieces adorning the walls are his own creation. And after viewing his work, we don't think you'll fault us for thinking the apartment might just be his largest piece of art, as the two are obviously informed by each other.

SF House Tour: Allie's Colorful and Bright Studio

7-1-08alliehome.jpgName: Allie Bruch
Location: San Francisco
Size: 475 sq. ft.
Years lived in: Rented for four years (and some months)

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgAs soon as we walked into Allie's studio we were smitten. So much beautiful color! When she walked us through her space we fell even more in love. Every piece of furniture or decoration has a story, and even though her look is very eclectic, everything works in perfect harmony. The architecture and design elements of the space is already something to be seen. Whether it be the inlay floors or the curved ceilings, there's pockets of detail everywhere. Match that with the gorgeous found objects (turned furniture pieces) and beautiful art (some of which Allie created herself), and we basically found a perfect apartment. Swoon.

SF House Tour: Natalie's Cozy Eclectic Rockridge Home

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgSome homes make you feel instantly at ease the moment you walk through the door. They're less about being on top of the latest design trends and more about spaces created over time that reflect the inhabitant, are thoughtfully designed so as to be easy to live in, and are effortlessly comfortable, all while looking great. Natalie's Oakland home is definitely one of these.

House Call: Shannon Lamden of Aunty Cookie

SLamdenCouch.jpg

Shannon Lamden (a.k.a. Aunty Cookie) first came to our attention because of her blog. We enjoyed seeing snippets of her home so much, we just had to ask her to participate in a House Call — all the way from Melbourne, Australia! Given how lovely her own textile creations are, we weren't the least bit surprised that her place is filled with lots of wonderful colors and patterns.

SF House Tour: Lorena & Esteban's Modern Yet Folksy Abode

6-24-lorena1.jpg
Name: Lorena Siminovich and Esteban Kerner
Location: San Francisco
Size: 1000 sq. ft.
Years lived in: 1!
>> Enter Slideshow

House Tour Button07.jpgSan Francisco artist Lorena Siminovich has a knack for putting things together. Take her collages, which combine vintage, found, recycled and painted papers. The end result? Whimsical works of art that are carried in stores like Velocity Art and Design, Zinc Details and Anthropologie.

Then there's the Edwardian house she shares with her husband, fashion designer Esteban Kerner. It's a wonderful mix of finds from their favorite shops, as well as garage sales and flea markets. The couple, who hail from Argentina, have also infused an international flair with pieces from New York (they moved from Brooklyn to San Francisco in 2006), Buenos Aires, Paris and London. It all comes together in a home that is as comfortable as it is stylish.

SF House Tour: Sam Grawe's Designer (via Craigslist) Digs

6-17-sam1.jpgName: Sam Grawe
Location: San Francisco
Size: 950 sq. ft.
Years lived in: Rented for two and a half years

>> Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgYou would assume that being the Editor-in-Chief of any magazine (and in Sam's case, that magazine is Dwell) would take up 90+ hours of your week, so imagine how surprised we were when we found out Sam also makes time to constantly peruse Craiglist (and we all know how much of a time sucker that can be) in order to furnish his pad and also jam out on a weekly basis to the sweet music he creates in his tastefully designed home studio.

SF House Tour: Barry and Rosemary's Eichler Home

112907_brisco1.jpg

Name: Barry and Rosemary Brisco
Location: San Mateo
Size: 1620 sq ft.
Years lived in: 7

>>Enter Slideshow

House Tour Button07.jpgGreat design is truly timeless. It's a testament to how functional these modern post-and-beam homes are even by today's standards. The Brisco family have created their own wonderfully modern and luxurious home that takes full advantage of Eichler's sprawling ranch design.

SF Outdoor Spaces Roundup #3: Skylights

For our final installment of our outdoor spaces roundup we turn to skylights (yesterday we did sunrooms, and before that patios). Now, we know a skylight isn't technically an outdoor space, but it's a great way to get a little sun and see the sky when other outdoor options are limited.

SF Outdoor Spaces Roundup #2: Sunrooms & Porches

Today's Outdoor Spaces Roundup spotlights sunrooms and porches (yesterday we did patios) — quasi-outdoor spaces where lucky folks can enjoy indoor activities while reaping the benefits of sunlight, and perhaps a refreshing cross-draft.

SF House Tour: Lisa's Creative Apartment

6-10-lisacoris2.jpgName: Lisa Coris
Location: San Francisco
Size: ~1300 sq. ft.
Years lived in: Rented for 12 years!

>> Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpg We can always tell when we walk into a home that's been been decorated over time, the furnishings and objects not just there to fill up the space, but a collection of things the owner spent years putting together. Lisa's apartment definitely falls into this category, and we weren't surprised to learn that she's been in the same apartment for 12 years - it manages to feel magazine-spread ready and incredibly comfortable at the same time.

SF Outdoor Spaces Roundup #1: Patios

It seems like a cruel joke: in a year when outdoor decor is really creative and inspiring, we're also experiencing the second coldest June on record in the Northwest. And not only is it cold and rainy, but it's dark. In three installments (and taking a cue from AT:Chicago), we go into the archives to indulge vicariously in the outdoor rooms and sunny salons our readers have shared with us in brighter times and places. Now up: patios.

SF House Tour: Annie and Eric's Art-Filled Ocean Beach House

6-3-housetour5.jpg
Name: Eric Rewitzer and Annie Galvin (aka Wexford Girl)
Location: Outer Richmond, Ocean Beach, San Francisco
Size: 1200 sq. ft.
Years lived in: Owned for 7 years
>> Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpg It's pretty obvious when you step into their house that Eric Rewitzer and Annie Galvin are artists. The first hint is the sheer amount of actual art throughout the house, much of it by one of the pair, but it's their strong use of color, creative finishes, and attention to detail that really shines through and let you know you're not dealing with just another rehabbed San Francisco home.

SF House Tour: Sharilyn's Lovely Studio

08neattidy_small.jpg
Name: Sharilyn Wright of Lovely Design

Years lived in: 2 years
Inspiration: Nature for palette, thrift shops for stuff

>>Enter Slideshow

House Tour Button07.jpgSharilyn Wright is the creative wonder behind Lovely Design, a Vancouver one-woman design studio. She also happens to be a good friend with whom I've stayed in touch since her move back from Los Angeles to her hometown of Vancouver. Sharilyn has been so kind to let us all peek inside her inspiring studio space, where she continues to design and hand make beautiful products for the home.

SF House Tour: Stacy Pancake's Simple Home

5-27-08 pancake1.jpg

Name: Stacy Pancake
Location: San Francisco
Size: 700 sq. ft.
Years lived in: 4.5, rented

>> Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgWe first fell in love with designer Stacy Pancake through her food-themed letterpress cards. We snatched up a few of the "foodie" cards and then lusted after the "dried goods" set over at the Curiosity Shoppe. We think her illustrations are quite beautiful in their understatement and simplicity and we were quite pleased, but not surprised, to see that same aesthetic manifested in her home.

House-Tour-Button06.jpgTwenty years ago, Phaedra, a ballet dancer with the Oakland and Sacramento Ballet companies, inherited a rent-stabilized apartment from her father. Phaedra just moved out, but for the past two decades, this home has thrived as a communal household and a refuge for dancers in or passing through the Bay Area. Located in the Mission District, the flat has seen close to a hundred wonderfully talented dancers enter its rooms, some staying for years, others for a few days.

SF House Tour: Matt's Cool and Concrete Dwelling

mattmain.jpgName: Matt
Location: Portland, OR
Size: 720 sq. ft.
Years lived in: Rented for almost 1 year

>>Enter Slideshow

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgWhat we appreciate most about Matt's apartment is his inability to adapt to a single style. His entire apartment is sprinkled with wonderful pieces from all eras and styles. From glossy aluminum to textured concrete, Matt's place represents taking risks within your interiors, and how fantastic the outcome can be.

SF House Tour: Gehry and Lanya's Life Meets Art

Location: Oakland
Size: 1150 sq. ft. 1 bedroom in an 1896 Victorian home
Years Lived in: 2

House Tour Button07.jpg"The apartment is special and worth honoring," says Lanya. Both Gehry and Lanya love to travel and have an incredible knack for creating community. Their home is the nexus of those interests and is seeped in the impact of the people they have met around the world and around the corner. Specifically, the color palette and the impromptu dance space attest to the amount of time they have spent in South and Central America...

2-23-housetourlogo.jpg

We couldn't have dreamed up a more appropriate house tour to end our Small Cool month. You may remember Sara, Matt and Bella as finalists from the contest last year. We were impressed by their declaration, "Small is BETTER! Even with a 3-year old and surely more on the way, we will never go back. Small is the new big!", but even more impressed with their follow through. Way to put your money where your mouth is....check it out.

4-29-toddnicole1.jpgName: Todd and Nicole
Home Then: 1800 sq. ft. home, Bernal Heights, San Francisco
Home Now: Same home but with one big change

ATrealpeoplebook.JPGTodd and Nicole's home is one of the 40 featured in our new book: Apartment Therapy Presents: Real Homes, Real People, Hundreds of Design Solutions.

We first saw Todd and Nicole's stunning house when AT Co-Founder Oliver Ryan spotted their photos online, soon after we launched AT:SF. Theirs was one of our very first House Tours. The response was amazing, and it's always remained one of our most popular tours. We asked them for an update...

House Call: Don't Miss Shannon Lamden of Aunty Cookie

SLamdenDining_Table_Decal.jpg
This is a heads-up that Anh-Minh put together a fantastic House Call that was posted today. Although she started working on it long ago for us, because it's in Australia it's over on our sister site, AT:LA.

House Tour Button07.jpgAlthough Ken grew up in LA, a veritable mid-century mecca, he remained relatively oblivious to all things design until he moved to New York in the early 90's. Hypnotized by the 6th Avenue flea market, he started to collect art deco artifacts from the 1930's and 1940's.

SF House Tour: Jennifer B.'s Eclectic "Tree House"

Years lived in: One

housetour2008.jpgYou've probably heard this design advice before: Fill your home with things you love. And we admit, we've been skeptical that this simple approach will lead to a cohesive space (e.g., can action figurines really co-exist with vintage, floral cushions?). But Jennifer's Marin County dwelling is making believers out of us. Many of her finds are from flea markets and small Bay Area shops, as well as from her travels. The end result is an apartment infused with her personality — and it definitely all works together.
