House Portraits: Custom Work by Jill Bliss

92809jillbliss1.jpgA few years ago my husband's nursery moved to a new location, so I commissioned a local artist (the fabulous Paul Madonna) to draw a portrait of the old store to commemorate the move. I love the idea of a house portrait, too—an artist's interpretation of a home, like this tree house portrait by Portland artist Jill Bliss...

Handmade Treehomes, #1A by Jill Bliss, available on 20x200

I've always been a huge fan of Jill's work, which celebrates the landscapes of California and the Pacific Northwest by examining their flora and fauna in exquisite, colorful detail. But I wasn't familiar with her house illustrations, which depict houses growing within tree trunks or surrounded by swirls of pattern and color. The tree house above was a custom portrait for a New York family.

Would you like to have a portrait of your house (or, if you're an apartment-dweller, perhaps your favorite room)? Which artist would you choose to create it? It might be interesting, too, to make one yourself. Try taking photographs of your home at different times of the day and playing with them in Photoshop.

To see more of Jill Bliss' lovely work, visit her website or her Etsy shop, where you can contact her about commissioning a house portrait of your own. She also has a fun blog that details some of her current projects.

Am I missing something here? While I understand we all have different opinions on art, I don't understand how some items on her etsy can be priced at $950. *shrug*
