2-23-housetourlogo.jpgAlina, Joey, Sean, and Vice's colorful and creative Berkeley home is far from the modern, sleek, and chic houses we often feature on our house tours. But that's exactly what we love about it. It exemplifies a DIY lifestyle and a punk sensibility that's completely fitting for these unique and dynamic artists. Filled with hand-me-downs, off-the-sidewalk cast-offs, and handmade items, theirs is a cozy home for creative minds to find a restful retreat and a fun, communal spot for friends and touring musicians and artists to gather.

A long term Berkeleyite, Alina has a deep appreciation for nature and the supernatural, which is apparent in the house's animal themed-decor and the crystals you'll find in her room. Joey, Vice, and Sean are all Alabama transplants, but they've made themselves at home in the East Bay underground art scene. Joey is a video artist and painter, Sean is in a band called Difference Engine, and Vice is in bands XBXRX, K.I.T., and Hawnay Troof. Mysticism, art, and music... As the residents of this unique home say: “How Berkeley Can You Be?”

AT Survey:

My/Our Style: Our home is shared by four housemates, so our style is a confluence of each of our creative personalities. The general theme is an appreciation for comfort, nostalgia and color. This is evoked by vintage and hand-made decorations, plush couches and brightly painted walls.

Inspiration: We want our house to be a comfortable place to share with friends and guests. Whether we’re hosting a game of Apples 2 Apples, enjoying a BBQ, or providing a warm, cozy space for a traveling friend and touring band to spend the night, we try to create a fun environment.

Favorite Element: Our Color Scheme.

Biggest Challenge: The biggest challenge is creating space for all of our ideas (and things) to work together.

What Friends Say: Everyone who has stayed here has commented on how much they like it.

Biggest Embarrassment: Because there are so many of us living here, clutter can gather quickly.

Proudest DIY: Adding a fourth room, painting the living room and hallway, and converting an oversized vintage radio cabinet into our turntable station.

Biggest Indulgence: There is a jacuzzi bath tub in the master bathroom!

Best Advice: “How Berkeley Can you Be?”

Dream Source: Something awesome gets left out on the curb and we find it.

Resources:

Window Treatments: Most of the curtains are handmade. Some by Joey, and some by Cheryl Christian.

Beds: Ikea children’s loft bed. Its essential in order to have space to live and work.

Artwork: Vice has original works by Kim Gordon, Jessalyn Aaland, Steve Keene, and posters by UTR in London, Paul Morgan, Matt Hart, and Seri Pop. He also has a framed t-shirt worn by Fred Thomas throughout most of his performances from 1999- 2007, and framed autographed photos of Bill Clinton and the original cast of Passions. Also in the house are pieces by Christina Seashore, Liz Harris, Todd Donahue, Ajay Reed, John Cummins, Jessica Efstratis, Kelly Lynn Jones, Cheryl Christian, Amy Fyrdundel, Nicole Neditch, Sarah Han, Rory Rabut, Lance Simmons, and Rachel Higgins, along with our own works and thrift store finds.

(Thanks, Alina, Vice, Joey, and Sean!)

“How Berkeley Can You Be?” is often a derogatory question; I'm assuming it's not intended that way in this case. It's certainly a funky home!

You guys look like a TON of fun and I would love to come over and hang out! Your home is chock full of some really eclectic stuff but surprisingly it looks very clean and tidy to me. Thanks for sharing and keep on having fun and loving life!

"punk sensibility"?

Believe me (I know from experience), this place is waaaaaay too clean and "cute" to be a real punks place. And that's a good thing. The punk pads that I've (unfortunately) visited haven't exactly had an "appreciation for comfort, nostalgia and color", more like an appreciation for malt liquor, piles of garbage and shredded box springs.

Cute it is - punk it ain't...

Yay! Finally a place that looks lived in! I love it! This is definitely a place that I could see myself hanging out in. Looks like you had a lot of fun decorating it too. Great job!

Aah, cute Bizerkeley kids. It's got to be a challenge to decorate with 4 artists in the house. It's bright & cheerful. And Someone loves crocheted afghans more than my Grandma.

I believe they told me that the white wall duck was from a thrift store. I found one almost exactly the same (except with colored doll eyes) at a thrift store in Pescadero over the weekend.

under the blizzard of wonderful often severely patina-ed (patinated?) objects, three principles unify all into a great serene whole: wild wall colors madly juxtaposed, objets trouvés, and AFGHANS (I have never been sure what to do with those besides nap under them with some part of my body sticking out and getting cold)

LOVE!! Creative salvage always makes me happy. Like the blue chandelier.

And just in time for winter, you make me want to crochet. My mother was making that daisy afghan, I swear... well, possibly she used a more foresty green. I may have to dig that out of storage and finish it.

But yes, please water that poor plant.

Sorry, but no. I'm all about thrift store finds, and they are obviously trying to be unique and different, which is good and they are definitely succeeding, but the thought of dusting all that stuff would drive me crazy. Some cohesion is OK, but, you know, that's just me.

Where did the dream sign above the bed come from? I'm assuming it was some great flea market find, but maybe someone knows where to get one? It's exactly what I've been imagining for my bedroom!

Awesome! This is one of the coolest houses I've seen on this site. I really like this kind of style. There is a good book that came out last year called "punk house" most of the houses are a lot messier that this, though!

I love houses that look lived in, my dream is to get my place looking like you can just walk in, grab a beer and crash on the couch for some good music and conversation.

My eyes accidentally skipped right over the "years lived in" header and went right to the names and years/months. I thought, what does that poor 8 month old baby named Vice have to look forward to on the playground and who names their baby Vice?! That'll teach me to read more carefully...

to Novabass...

just because they're not drunkpunks doesnt mean they ain't punk. my friend is definitely punk & her pad definitely looks entirely like this.

it's about being a grown-up girl, despite your musical preference.

Great home...pllleeeasse show us more homes like this. I used to be a HUGE ReadyMade fan, and once I started getting more and more into "good" design, that love slowly faded away. But I want it back, and the only way to get it back is to see more spaces like this!

LilyC,

I thought the same thing about Vice until I read more carefully...it's a grown-up GUY in a band, not a baby!

But you can be sure someone out there actually has named an infant "Vice."

this is exactly what a young person's home should look like. LOVE: the pink hallway, the afghans, the unicorn throw, and the art (obv). BUT: i'm also confused about the glass between the bedroom and the other living room. is that living room another communal room, or is it mostly for the person whose bedroom is next to it?

I love the lived-in feeling too, it'd be great if AT showed some more "real" homes like this one. Not my style, but I can certainly see how you could be very comfortable in there.

While not a fan of this space, I appreciate being able to look around.

I too agree that AT should feature a broader range of house tours reflecting people working with varying budgets.

So much to love...But I am willing to die for the paint color name of the Pink--I am holding my breath until you tell me! (Please??)
Really--it is a great space and clearly indicates the spirit of those who live there.
Great job.

The name of the paint is called.... "Candy Coated."
Also, the glass wall is inside my room. It divides my bed area from the rest of the room. It's the house's "master bedroom".
and thanks everyone for all the nice comments!!
