What a cozy, welcoming home. I just want to curl up on the couch, listen to a record and read a good book. Thank you for letting us in!

I don't know; I didn't see what was so hip about the place. It was done in basic Shabby Chic with some questionable purchases from a 70's arts & crafts fair (the mirror with the woman's face as part of the frame; the embroidered yarn flowers). Well, I shouldn't scoff at decor from days of yore: at least it stayed away from animals' heads mounted on wooden plaques and antler candlesticks. It did look wholesome!

Lovely. And I liked the embroidered yarn flowers! One question though--what is that thing on the little credenza that looks like a piece of bark?

I love this house, I feel like this is what my grandmother's house would look like if I lived there for a month.

However, I can imagine a man visiting here, never mind living here.

Yeah... this is very grandmother-ish. The crocheted chandelier is killing me.

At first i thought i might bag on this place, because I don't care for crafty things, but i actually really like it; as others have pointed out, it has a really comfortable, upretentious feel. It's obvious, too, that a lot of thought went into the furnishings and art.

The built-ins, new and old, are great, and the muted colors keep things light and airy. I could do without the wall of handbags, though. And what is that miniature house?

That is the best dollhouse ever!

Hooray for a happy loving sweet home ... and hooray for a home where 3 children live! I'd love to have a cup of tea while the kids play with that lovely doll house.

the copy and the pictures don't jibe. it's a lovely, warm, wholesome home, but reading the 'hip' headline makes me expect something else

With a few exceptions -- glam, punk, haute disco -- '70s artifacts leave the taste of vomit in my mouth. But that's me. I collect antique poison bottles and... other things... with a grand potential for fugliness. So.

Chris and Stephanie have a different aesthetic and have used it to create light, fun home that balances the homespun with the whimsical (yay, wall o' handbags). So crisp. So white. And dude, I have never seen dishes stacked with such love.

A beautiful home, especially for children - and I really love the delftware in the kitchen. Supercool collection. Thank you for sharing.

It's nice to have a house tour for a home that has a family - not some modern/bare/hip apartment of a single hipster. Definitely looks lived in and loved. Nice job!

Perhaps you can help me with a dilemma that I have had for a few months ... the slipcovered sofas -- how practical are they? You have a family and it looks like these are not in "showroom only" livingrooms ... so:

1) How often do you have to wash the slipcovers (and do you wash or dryclean)
2) How easy/difficult are they to get on and off.

I am looking at a sofa and chair, but it is a significan investment for us and if I could get some feedback from a real life situation, it would really be helpful!

Love the wall of handbags. I did this in my bedroom once, but got tired of it after a year or so. She's got cooler bags than I do, though.

I could build a room - a house - an entire life - around that fantastic set of Russel Wright dinnerware. Gah. Love.

As with all house tours, you know what I really want? A floor plan. And less vignettes (I've seen the mantel, thank you, I do not need four views of it). I think floor plans would be so helpful for people thinking about remodeling, building, or just organizing our thinking about using small spaces.

Robyn - the slipcovers are easy to come off and I just throw them in the washing machine. Sometimes I have to wash them once a week, sometimes they can go for a couple months - it all depends. When they do come out of the wash, it's like having a new couch, though - which is worth every penny of the Shabby Chic couch. It was a real stretch for us getting these couches, but I'm happy I spent the money on them (by the way - they are all 30% off right now until Dec 24). I don't like most leather furniture (which is easier to keep clean than upholstery) and with kids, any couch is going to get gross after a couple years, so its nice being able to wash everything. Not getting a skirted bottom also makes the couch feel less like its slip-covered. Probably more information than you need, but hope it helps!

If you're in San Francisco, *definitely* visit Stephanie's shop, Bluebird, in the Lower Haight. I used to walk by it every day on my way to work, and it has the same adorable aesthetic as their home.

Retro junk and mounds of clutter means someone is fine with ordinariness. And I am afraid that means you get a C minus. Try harder next time to be original and vivacious!
