We first fell in love with designer Stacy Pancake through her food-themed letterpress cards. We snatched up a few of the "foodie" cards and then lusted after the "dried goods" set over at the Curiosity Shoppe. We think her illustrations are quite beautiful in their understatement and simplicity and we were quite pleased, but not surprised, to see that same aesthetic manifested in her home.

Ms. Pancake is clearly influenced by nature, both in her design work and in the color palette and elements she chooses for her apartment. Soft organic images, textures and colors are kicked up a notch by small pops of color or graphic elements. We love that every item seems accounted for, loved and intentional. It makes her calm apartment feel genuine, warm and comfortable in its simplicity.
AT Survey:
My/Our style: I am drawn to simple clean lines and design that stands the
test of time. Contemporary, organic, ethnic, mid-century, bohemian and western best describes my style. I've collected a lot of furniture and interior objects over the years, but the ones I have not given away are timeless pieces
Inspiration: Nature is present throughout my apartment in various shapes, colors and materials; juxtaposed with urban influences. Most importantly, I like things to be interesting to look at, nice to touch, and versatile to use. Indigo, bonsai, succulents, ceramics, clay, stones, bones, hemp, ethnic textiles, wood and wool, and my art collection
Favorite Element: Neighborhood: I live on a tree lined street with a big Japanese Maple shading my apartment.
Biggest Challenge: Lack of storage space
What Friends Say: Great location; I cannot believe you have a washer/dryer; You could throw a party here.
Biggest Embarrassment: Electrical Cords
Proudest DIY: Enclosed a nook with an old real estate sign for storage space in the Dining Room
Biggest Indulgence: Art, McRoskey Mattress
Best advice: Feng Shui hints

i love stacy's work and have always been a big fan of hers -- but i have to admit, i'm feeling a little 'meh' about this house.
maybe larger shots and fewer detail close-ups would help give a better picture.
thanks!

I love the white sofa! Could you tell me who it is made by and is it leather or vinyl?

No slideshow! Frustrating!

I personally could care less about the slideshow.

That slide show is really messed up. I saw some of the slides by clicking next, then back, then next again, but then that stopped working.
view Pixie's profile
wished the slideshow would work. and a little puzzled by the omnipresent book stacking trend, did i miss something? it just doesn't seem practical at all.

Horrible new slideshow and display page. Can't stand it!

I'm a little disturbed by the deer head on the wall. Overall, I don't see anything special here. It's a bit too spartan for me. Also, what is the deal with the close-up shot of the knives? I do like the white sofa.

Great use of color right where its needed. Who needs a bunch of stuff anyway???? Its darling. Can I come over and do my laundry and have a cup of tea in the dining room with the most perfect shade of yellow paint that I've ever seen!

Her apartment is stellar. These photos don't do it justice, her art collection is amazing (notice the Chris Johansen? thought not).
Who is disturbed by a deer head? it was found, not like she shot it and so what if she did? And whats with the slide show comments? isn't one enough? Redundancy people! jeeze.

Super cool and well-done, exquisite taste, great sense of individual style. It's nice to see someone living in a sophisticated, no-cute zone. Where can I get a deer head?

Is Pancake really her last name?

I second that Michael W. Can anyone tell us who makes the sofa or where we might find one like it?

Awesome home. Some of the photos were stunning. The kitchen cabinets sort of stuck out to me, in an odd way, they didn't fit with the rest of your place. But that's the only thing I would change. Very unique place.

I really wish I could have viewed the slideshow. I know it has been said repeatedly, but PLEASE correct the new viewing format as soon as possible.

oh boy - another deer head... sorry i no likey but that's just me.
love the white couch especially the yawning cat....you couldn't have timed that shot better!
i can't get enough of pets who are not camera shy at all.
also somehow this seems more spacious than just 700 sf. niiiice.
i do miss the slideshow feature working...thought it was just my computer.

No -- I've given up looking at slideshows (which used to be my favorite thing) because they are behaving badly AND because the ad placement forces me to scroll down to even see the picture. Sorry, but that's a killer for me.
view dblitz1's profile
Very nice, just shows that you don't have to have a bunch of stuff to have a lovely inviting home. someday i hope to live like this
view moddog's profile
This isn't my taste at all and I couldn't live with so little, I'm afraid, but it is very interesting to see a space that is both pared down and still so individual. It is inspiring for that reason.
I don't like the new slideshows either and overall the ad situation on the site is a bit overwhelming these days.

I find this apartment serene and beautiful, as I share a similar aesthetic and aspiration to such spare living. I am very interested in feng shui, and would love to know which hints Stacy implemented here. I would have assumed that animal bones/heads would be bad feng shui, but I could be wrong. Please enlighten me.:)

I agree with previous commentators - the new slideshow format is terrible. It's awkward and too compressed together, and I don't like having to scroll down to see each photo. Please go back to the old layout. Thanks.

I am on IE and the slide show is not even functioning... Old layout, please.

Stacy Pancake - you've got a beautiful apartment and THE BEST name ever (runner up is Butch Mcgee).

Love your home, but suspect the images don't quite do it justice.
Appreciate your Paulistano leather chair and where it's placed. Also, very cool that you have an AJ Royal pendant lamp.
view lolax's profile
Ok, I really, really want to know about the sofa--and a couple of others have mentioned they would too. Can you please take a minute out of your day to let us know? Thanks!

Michael W. and IntheDetails // I am sorry for the delay in getting you the information about the sofa. My studio is under an inch of water due to a plumbing problem. :(
It is a white leather Theatre Sofa from Design Within Reach.

Great pictures. And just when I was thinking about how I admire but could never emulate your perfect restraint, your cat made me laugh aloud.

Stacy, thanks for the info and sorry to hear about your plumbing problem. I hope everything works out for you.

I LURRRRRVE the yawning cat! I like the style this house has been photographed in, but I agree that it does not give a good overview of the actual living space.
AT, go on, change the slideshow back to its old format. Please!

Lots of detail shots: not enough room views.
Love the sofa. Love the cat shot. Love the tower o' books, but what if you wanted to read one??

This is the sanest and most serene house I've seen in ages and a really strong reminder, to me at any rate, of why I visit this web site. If Stacy could distill the essence of the place into a bottle, I'd buy a case and dispense it so slowly and carefully it would last the rest of my life. I especially like that nothing overwhelms the overall air of the place, and nothing jumps out and says, "Look at me, I'm expensive, I'm precious and I'm a design cliche." This proves that something modest, but imbued with a sublime sensibility, can achieve a monumental impact. Great job.

I'm tried of the close-up photos in these slide shows. I don't know if people are trying to be artistic or annoying or if they are trying to hide something or what. A close-up of knives? Seriously? Let's see some more wide-scale, whole-room shots so we can get a real sense of these rooms.
view jyw's profile
Seems pretty unlikely that the books are actually just a stack of books. It's probably a Sapien or Sapien-style shelf. http://www.designwithinreach.com/product/categories/storage/bookcases/sapien-bookcase-short.do

for those who can't see the slide show.......when you are on the first picture after you have entered the slide show page click the button to see them all as thumbnails. From there click on the second picture. The buttons to go to the next and previous pictures should then be available and you can go through them all then.
view christinesass's profile
Can anyone tell me where the leather chair with the metal frame came from? I think it's great. Also, I like the close up photos, as long as they are combined with larger room shots...they help me often see how something is put together.
view Tehama's profile
It the Paulistono Chair, for that matter everything but the dead animals if from DWR, which too me is no prize. Theater sofa is nice, just bought one for a client in his place.
The bedroom photo is nice and looks relaxing, however, there is nothing else here that seems cohesive.
Keep working on it..Seems like apt has good bones, which is half the battle.
view recon1's profile
You have a very nice place. Not a fan of the dead animals on the wall, and the closeup of the knives in the kitchen was a little creepy, but other than that, I really liked the simplicity of your place. It is serene and is probably wonderful to come home to after a long day at work.
view suzy8track's profile
I really like the simplicity and serenity of this space. The knives? Looked like a perfect set up for a horror flick. Other than that though... loved it! ; )
