How To: Make a Bike Rack

5-7-08 bike rack.jpgWe are related to some passionate bicyclists (affectionately known by us as "bike nerds") who have dedicated several garages and a basement or two to their love... but that's in middle America, where space like that actually exists. Bike enthusiasts in the city have to be a little more creative in order to accommodate all their toys. Enter this hacked bike rack.

We like this set-up, made out of what appears to be a stripper pole (those Swedish are so forward-thinking!) and some brackets. It taps into the last bastion of spacial real-estate in an apartment - the upper wall, and looks pretty sharp to boot. As a bonus, we think you're bound to get pretty ripped having to lift your bike up there to the top spot.

And fine, so maybe it's not actually a stripper pole, but we're sure if you have a spare one that would work, too.

i just bought a bike rack that works very similar to that. found a guy who had one but it didn't fit his bike so he sold it to me. Now i just have to get the spare couch out of the office to set it up.

So fun things like this only work if you ride a guys bike huh?
Anyone have any suggestions on how to hack the hack to make a girls bike hold?

someone on ikeahacker suggested turning one of the hooks upside down so the bike tilts, heavy side to the 'correct hook' lighter side supported by the upside down hook. that might work with a lady's bike.

Another option for those with more than two bikes is getting a heavy duty garmet rack and big hooks. It works great!
