How To: Educate Yourself About Lighting

2006_12_05_ikeabath.jpg

Seems like all the major retailers are creating education sections on their websites these days, particularly on the subject of lighting your home well. We took a look at three of these How To's (EQ3, Room & Board, and Ikea) to see what there was to see.

EQ3's guide is essentially a product catalogue that urges us to "consider aesthetics" when choosing lighting and to see it as an opportunity to "add glamour." Um, thanks.

Room & Board's guide is much more helpful, pointing our useful design features like pivoting arms and providing placement guidelines ("A good rule of thumb is to position the bottom of the pendant shade 30 inches above the table.")

Next, Ikea. Our hunch was that the Swedish giant would have the best advice. (Swedes need artificial light to stay sane, so they're experts)

True to expectation, they've broken things down room by room, leaving no shadow un-illuminated. Best tip we'd never heard: place wall-mounted reading lamps close to the center of a shared bed and direct light outward to avoid disturbing your partner.

Plus, they installed a chandelier over a clawfoot tub. EQ3 could learn a thing or two about glamour.

Check it out.

Am I the only one who doesn't like EQ3? it's just bland to me. Their stuff is the same as Ikea, though more expensive, and not even as innvoative as Ikea.

Shannon, I'm not a fan of EQ3 either. Yawn.

In defense of EQ3, they are the only reasonably priced modern bed manufacturer that I could fine who sold individual components (e.g. head rest; adjustable slats, can click on my name to see example). This was useful for me since we're having our bedframe custom made but needed just a few components.

I really like the two ikea lamps above the bed in the picture above; however, I went to their website and cannot find them. Can someone help identify these lamps, or link to it?

Thanks. David

David -

BERYLL wall spotlight shows up on the Canadian site. I did just see it at the Paramus, NJ, location so it's still available in the US. I believe it was $15.99 or $19.99.

David, I'm in the US, and I have a BERYLL spotlight. I either got it at Elizabeth or Paramus, I can't remember now. Sometimes IKEA will have things in store that they don't have on the website. Good luck.

Ack! I forgot that I got referred over here from the NY site. Disregard all that blather about what's available in New Jersey. Sorry!
