How To: Make a Folded Paper Lamp

10-20-08 lamp final.jpgWe love the look of this folded paper lamp, and were pleasantly surprised to learn that it can be done on your own. All you need is just a little patience...

10-20-08 lamp project.jpgLike say, 6 to 8 hours worth. That's how long it took Ah-Yi to make this 13" diameter version. As she says, "it's not difficult to make this lamp but it takes time". The nice thing is that most of that is spent folding, which can be done while watching a movie or some other such diversion (maybe rocking out to G 'n' R?). This project reminds me of Le Klint shades and lamps. Today their shades are made out of plastic but the vintage ones are made out of folded paper.

Oh wow! I love this idea!!! I live in a rental apartment where you have those ugly globes with two light bulbs in the center of the room. I've been looking for a solution to hide it. I think this could just do the trick. I'll put it on my to-do list. And when I start this, I intend to beat Ah-Yi's time! ;)

I learned how to do that fold last year in class and it does take tons of patience. You might want to try it first and get the hang of it before watching TV or a movie because it does take some attention in the beginning to get the folds right. ..or at least watch something you've seen before ;)

I cut and fold lots of paper and make handbound journals so this is right up my alley! Cool!

@whytephoenix Go to an art store- I bet printmaking paper would be GORGEOUS and would fold really nicely... try Lenox or Rives BFK comes 30x40 inches or so
