How To: Pack Light

Starting in the last week of August, we're embarking on some serious travel adventures. We'll be starting out state-side but jumping over to international waters just two short days after we return from our first trip. Both trips require minimal luggage and business casual attire for HOT and HUMID weather. Sounds like fun, eh?

With all of the crazy new airline rules and fees, we've become mildly obsessed with packing lists and diagrams. Our current favorite go-to site is OneBag. It features lists galore and recommendations for bags, what to pack and how to pack.

Check it out here.

Wait a minute, that's all we're taking? Are we packing our clothes into a handbag? There's a lot more room in my carry-on.

I like to use the paramilitary method I learned in the Boy Scouts: roll everything up. Unless you're packing linen (and sometimes I do with great results) the clothes come out with few wrinkles. I also find I can get a lot more into a medium sized camping backpack than I can a standard rolling suitcase because there is less bulk in its construction.

I travel a lot and mschwartz's roll-rule is fool-proof. By far the best way to travel!

I always roll up my clothes. a friend of the family came over to help me pack once (she travels a lot) and was like you have a lot of wasted space and after we rolled everything I had like 20% more room!

the only thing I know about new airline regulations is you have to pay for your second checked item? is that correct for all airlines? When I came back home in May from college they said I was exempt because I had bought my ticket the year before.

Rolling is the way to go! And stuff your socks, underwear and small items into shoes. Wear your bulkiest items (i.e. dress shoes, jackets) if possible.

Couple of dryer sheets in your suitcase will keep everything smelling fresh!

I was just reading about bundle-packing yesterday and they say it's better than rolling. Less wrinkles. I'm going to give it a try on the trip I'm taking in a few weeks. I'm doing the whole "one bag" carry on thing for 2 weeks in Samoa. Wooo-hooo!!!
