How To: Remove Cigarette Odor from Wood Furniture

3-18-cigarette.jpg

The other day we happened upon some tips about how to remove cigarette odor from wood furniture. When buying furniture off Craigslist and at flea markets, we've always stayed away from furniture that smells like smoke (well, except for that one cupboard that, we swear, gave us a contact high as we were driving it down the freeway). So it's good to know that there are some remedies that may work.

Oh! On this topic ... Besides smoke, does anyone also know how to get that old musty smell out of old wood furniture? You know what I mean ... The smell of your grandma's attic...??

I love my new credenza that I bought on CL:

But the inside of it has such an awful musty smell that I can barely use it. For some reason two of the drawers are fine so I have stuff in those, but the bottom drawer and the two side cubbies aren't usable due to the strong smell (everything you put in there stinks!)

In the last two months I've tried:
Murphy's oil soap
Baking soda
Cedar
Lavendar sachets
White vinegar

And no change! Anyone have any tips on saving my favorite piece of furniture! Do the kitty litter or coffee options that are listed in this smoke article work for any type of smell??

Thanks!

The best luck I have had is vinegar, water and lemon juice. Spray down the furniture (not too much to ruin anything) and then let the whole thing sit in the sun for as long as possible. Try keeping small bowls of vinegar in the drawers if they still smell. Good Luck!

There is a brand-new product on the market that I used to eliminate cigarette cigar smoke out of my room and especially my curtains. It's called Room Shocker. It completely penetrates wood, concrete or any porous material. It should do the trick. It works really well, and also completely disinfect up to 500 square-foot room. You can stick it in your hutch and it should get rid of the smell within four hours.
You can find it on a website called BiocideSystems.com
good luck!
