CitizenM Hotel

7-9-citizenm1.jpgHave you ever hopped in a hotel shower and had no idea how to turn it on? Not only has it happened to us, it just happened to our parents, who returned yesterday from a stay at the brand new citizenM Hotel.

Sleek, uber modern and circular, our dad just couldn’t figure it out. But after a few frustrating minutes, it became clear – close the door and the shower automatically kicks in. 7-9-citizenm4.jpgThis isn’t the only unusual feature of the two-week old Amsterdam hotel. It features check-in kiosks (vs. a traditional concierge desk) and modular rooms pre-made in a factory off-site. And upon arrival, they ask about your “mood” – business, party, relaxation or romance – and adjust the room’s lighting according to your preference. 7-9-citizenm5.jpgOur parents loved the Vitra and Eames furniture and the opportunity to share their opinions with one of the hotel's four investors. Most of all, they liked the change of pace from their previous accommodations – a 17th century villa in Tuscany . See if we ever skip a family trip again!

Hope they do something about the initial splash of cold water.

I like it mostly. However-I like some privacy on the privy.

I wish I had stayed there when I was in Amsterdam 3 weeks ago...

Those showers totally look like star trek transporters.

Love it. And I've definitely been in hotels where it took me a second to get the shower running.

Cool, but not cozy. I guess I'm too traditional.

This post reminds me of a television commercial for - I think - one of the travel websites (Travelocity? Expedia? Priceline?) in which a woman is booking a hotel for her parents and she's trying to decide what sort of hotel they would like. "Modern?" she wonders, and then we see her imagining her parents unable to figure out the sink and shower. I wish I could find it on YouTube.

YES!!! Graefix!! That commercial used to crack me up!! You gotta love the older generation and their "knobs". My grandmother never trusted anything that didn't have a knob that she could twist on.

Aha, I have read a lot about citizenM before but it was nice to see some more photos. The company plans to open a bunch of hotels across Europe in the near future, with the next one being on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam.

I particularly find the concept of a pod hotel to be really interesting. What an innovative way to cut down on costs so that money can be spent on more exciting things...like those crazy showers!
