David Sarti's Small, Affordable Home
Seattle

Much ink has been spilled about David Sarti's Seattle home over the last couple of years, but none of it here, to our amazement. His gorgeous home sits on a tiny 40 by 50 foot piece of urban infill in Judkins Park, and comes in at just over 1000 square feet if you count his outdoor workshop, 800 if you don't.

The magic of the whole thing is that he designed the house himself, and built it for under $200,000 including the price of the lot (in 2006).

He's pulled it off by using light, a seriously frugal and uncluttered approach to decor and clever built-in storage for this modern, 2-bedroom marvel.

What a great little house.

I love the mezzanine bookcases, the red exterior color and his vintage Mercedes S-Class.

Just lovely. And the red exterior is perfect.

I really like the driveway. Would this work in the northeast where we get nasty winters? How do you care for grass pavers?

saw this on SSBS or dwell. cool space. i admire they're use of inexpensive materials but, the overall effect makes the interior look cheap.

I remember it from SSBS as well.

Yep, it's in a backyard. It's an infill -- if you go to the Redfin listing there's a vertical shot of the divided lot that lets you see how it's been built.

The listing suggests that the whole lot comes with the house: I think he needs to get a better realtor, because that can't be right!

Hahaha... if you look at the map on redfin it has the wrong lot marked as for sale. I heart red fin but the the innaccuracies in the mapping function are annoying. Also googlemaps allows you to zoom in just a teensy bit more.

...actually after reading the text on the ad, it might be the lot in front is for sale as well "Lot is zoned L2 with room to grow or add second unit"... WHERE, up?

I love it, but I hardly think a $475K price tag is justified.

OMG - I know David from when we were kids! I am SO GLAD to see that what we thought was crazy in college (he tore up his carpet and painted the concrete floor - *gasp* haha) has matured in to something beautiful!

Price on the house has been reduced to *ONLY* $449k :D

I loved this house when I saw it in Dwell and luckily live just up the street so I went to take a look at it on Sunday. It is super cool. The perfect pad for an artistic type with deeper pockets than mine.

I took some add'l pictures of the upstairs and studio since they're never shown. http://web.me.com/fitzmoto/AdditionalSamples/Sarti.html
