Five Inspiring Design Details from the Decorator Showcase

It's no secret that the Decorator Showcase house represents the sky-high end of home design, with furnishings and treatments that are probably way out of reach for most of us. But so much design talent goes into the house that there is also no shortage of inspiration for potential DIY projects that could be scaled down to a more affordable level. Check out five of our favorite ideas from the Showcase after the jump...

1 The Teenage Daughter's Room, designed by Palmer Weiss, is one of our favorite rooms in the house. The matching window treatments and wallpaper are a lot of fun, and we especially love the idea of hanging a valence and curtains around a doorway (in this case, the door to the bathroom). It's a cute way to add some drama and symmetry, and would be easy enough to replicate at home.

2 Burlap is everywhere in this year's Showcase, and the giant burlap curtain in the entryway, designed by Nicole Hollis, makes a striking statement. But what we love best about it is the giant nautical rope used as a curtain tieback. Somehow this is both rustic and elegant, and it works especially well because the rope motif is echoed in other decor elements throughout the entryway.

3 The Guest Bath, designed by Lynn Amon, is a serene oasis. This orchid specimen is just stunning, and the idea of using natural sticks and twigs as orchid stakes is brilliant. The twigs add a lovely architectural element to the arrangement.

4 Sometimes it can be difficult to soften the feel of a workspace, but Benjamin Dhong's design of the canopy over the desk in Her Study is a lovely gesture. The canopy is draped over a decorative dowel near the ceiling and anchored to the sides of the desk. A DIY version of this simple design would be relatively easy to try at home.

5 The flower vase sconces in this Powder Room designed by Anastasia Faiella are such a sweet idea. We love the way they frame the mirror and bring a touch of whimsy to the room. With a couple of simple bud vases (or even test tubes) and some ingenuity, this would be a fun DIY project as well.

Visit the Decorator Showcase web site for more information about the house, which is open for admission until May 25th.

Wow, the second "showhouse" in two days, and all I can think is--regular AT readers are way more talented than people who get paid to decorate. These are really underwhelming, to say the least.

I love the oh-so-subtle wallpaper in the Guest Bath. And the tassel on the window treatment is delightful.

Just a little FYI - burlap stinks. I used a lot of it for a banquet last year, and it smelled pretty bad when it was all in a bundle. I imagine you could treat it somehow, but untreated, those curtains would smell awful.

I hope these are the "before" the decorator arrived photos--these rooms are pretty sad.

Other than the desk with the curtain panel....I'm so surprised I was so underwhelmed. Nothing jumped out at me at all that I would want to incorporate into my personal decor.

1) looks suburban, and the girls drives her Dad's 1973 Lincoln Continental, doesn't she?
2)Have to admit, I love it. You never know when you'll need some rope.
3)Tassels should be reserved for pasties.
4)Reading under the blankets at night with a flashlight/home fort anyone?
5)Doesn't resonate on any level. Couldn't they find smooth walls for a designer showcase? And a tissue box??!! Hello??
