What most people consider to be the first ranch house is actually located in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz. Designed by Bay Area modernist architect William Wurster, the Gregory Farmhouse was featured on the cover of Sunset in July 1930. Wurster also won an award from the Northern California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the home, and House Beautiful's first prize in its 1931 Small House Competition.
