A couple of months ago we stayed at
Hotel Diva in Union Square. Because we spent five years traveling all over California for our job, and staying in boring chain hotels, it was really refreshing to stay in a hotel that was affordable, yet clean and modern. The rooms are sleek and sophisticated, and we were especially intrigued by the use of color.
While the carpets are a vibrant cobalt blue, the walls are white and the Bertoia side chairs, Artemide Tolomeo bedside lamps, and sculpted steel headboards (designer Olle Lundbergs signature) are silver. Steel grey bedspreads cover white sheets. But it's the small touches of color that pop and really make a difference. The reverse side of the bedspread is orange, as are the ice bucket, bathroom containers, and the Pablo Gloss desk lamp. They may be small things, but they warm up the cool white, grey, blue. The result is a comfortable, not cold, room.
It's something to remember when decorating your own home. You don't have to splash color all over the walls -- after all, not everyone is as brave as
Lisa. You can start with white walls, add in colorful flowers, art, textiles, objects, maybe move on to painting just one wall.
(Oh, and chain hotels, take note: You don't have to buy out
DWR, but your copying
Hotel Diva's use of simplicity and color would be welcomed by many travelers who don't want to stay in a place reminiscent of a '70s rec room.)

I stayed at the Diva a few years back and would highly recommend it to anyone (and often do). Yeah, it's hip, well appointed, and has an incredible Union Square location. It doesn't have that overly smart-ass boutique attitude....and that's a welcome change.
Thanks so much for this posting. Helps me to figure out what people want in their hotel rooms. I know I am going to try to do a few special things in ours but we're a long way away yet
their ultra vivid but still subtle lobby beckons from the street...thanks for this peek inside
Yes, Hotel Diva is clean, modern and affordable, but it has also seen better days. I stayed there last year and it shows.
Actually, the hotel underwent a renovation this year. During my stay, I had a tour of the new "Suite Within Reach" and the special Kids' Suite, as well as several rooms on different floors. They were all brand-new. (In fact, I asked when I could move in.)
Oooooh...this reminds me of my favorite hotel in Sydney, Australia (both in name & in style): The Dive Hotel (http://www.divehotel.com.au/3.html), right on Coogee Beach. $111 buys you a room with crisp lines, uber soft sheets, a couple fresh flowers daily, & (my favorite part) a full kitchen downstairs that has cereal, freshly squeezed OJ, muffins, & coffee available anytime. And the checkout is 1 pm, so you can enjoy a leisurely departure. Ahhhhhh.... I have to check out the Diva here in SF to see how it compares :)
